Yuvvraaj
2008 proved to be a really bad year for Bollywood, with very few hit films and innumerable flop films which include many mega budgets and just when you thought 2008 can’t get worse than this for Bollywood, another bomb drops again and this time it is, Subhash Ghai’s, Yuvvraaj.

I, normally, never like when people talk during the movie, but thank god, they made fun of the movie otherwise I would have left the theater during the movie only.

Well, nothing was right for Yuvvraaj from the starting of the promotions. Music has not been well received, promos lacked the required punch, and then there was Zayed Khan who seriously needs to quit this industry or at least join some acting class.

Yuvvraaj is a vacuous effort from the showman himself, who gave us legendary movies in the past. Nothing is right about this movie, except Anil Kapoor.

For first, script of the movie is so stupid that you would laugh during the emotional scenes, believe me, people were laughing and add to that imbecilic dialogues which directly came from the movies of 1970s. Background score of the movie is a total waste and only two songs are good in the movie; “Tu Meri Dost Hain” and “Shano Shano.”

Subhash Ghai spent most of his time and money searching for exotic locations, if he had spent half of that time and money on his editor then Yuvvraaj would be have somewhat watchable. Most of the movie scenes start with a fade-in effect and end with fade-out effect.

You can’t blame the editor much if the direction of the movie is weak. Mr. Ghai, here is a suggestion for you, how about watching some 2008 movies and then directing a film? I’m sure you would do much better. Exotic locations, beautiful sets, and foreign people don’t attract Indian audience anymore.

And what’s with the subtitles in Hindi for the English dialogues spoken by foreign actors? We can understand English pretty well, thank you!

Now let’s talk about the foreign actors or are they really actors? I mean, Mr. Ghai, you could have spent a little money on hiring some good actors instead of wannabe people on the streets who act even worse than Katrina Kaif, ok that’s not right, no one can act worse than Katrina.

What about the scene in which Katrina and Salman are in a restaurant and talking and the angle is such that you get to see foreign actors in the front with wine glasses. You’ve to watch that scene, they didn’t do a thing sitting there, and the lady was too hesitant to drink the wine. I wonder what was in it.

Talking about acting, there is none. If you leave out Anil Kapoor, who is the only saving grace of the movie, then there is no one in the movie who knows how to act. What the hell happened to Salman Khan in Yuvvraaj? After giving such a good performance in Heroes, he is like total blank here and those inconsistent looks of him don’t help either.

And if you’ve Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif as other leads then only God can save you. Katrina doesn’t do anything in the movie except looking good just like her other films and this time she is defeated by the girl who played Zayed Khan’s gold digger girl friend (the girl in Shano Shano song). It was a delight to watch her whenever she came on screen, even though she couldn’t speak Hindi that well, but at least, she knew some acting.

People were mocking Zayed’s acting and laughing at him, especially the scene in which his car broke down and he was screaming in the middle of the road.

Then there are bunch of supporting actors who are just smiling here and there and don’t know the “abc” of acting. You’ve to see the expressions of those actors, seriously. This is also because of the bad editing and Mr. Ghai’s outdated style.

And this leaves us to Anil Kapoor, playing the autistic son, who only knows how to act in the whole crew. If it hadn’t been for him, I would have given Yuvvraaj a big ZERO. Salman, Zayed, and Katrina should learn something from this guy, who is, undoubtedly, the most versatile actor in our industry today.

Verdict

Yuvvraaj is a not a movie which you should watch by spending your hard-earned money, hell, don’t even waste your internet’s bandwidth in downloading the pirated copy of this film, because it doesn’t deserve it.

Mr. Ghai, with all due respect, I’ve to say that you’re still stuck in 1970s era and you’ve to come out of it seriously. If you’re teaching this type of stuff in your film school then God saves our film industry. Even those extra “v” and “a” will not be able to save this movie from becoming a flop. Better luck next time.

  6. starwind says:

exuse me, but the first line itself is a shocker….yuvvraaj may be a little outdated but definitely not a bad film. Bad films are Mission Istanbul and Tashan. Yuvvraaj was a good movie, period. Too bad, Dostana lovers wont relish it.

  7. rajesh says:

this is injustice by the critics i had watched the film and it is really good. At least it is a film to be watched with family. not like dostana which these so called critics says a good one and you cannot watch with family.

  8. newsdose says:

Well, rajesh, it has been trashed by almost every critic. Only Taran gave it 3 stars otherwise everyone gave it 1 or 1.5

  9. Darshit says:

I dont know why but why everyone is comparing this to Dostana??? Dostana was simple fun film. Which is nver near to such a grand opus starring music of A R Rehman. And Dostana ”Entertained” everyone.

But this fails miserabaly. Sinks completely. It has killed all songs by placing them all over wrong places. Shoddy direction, editing, dialogues, story, screenplay – all handled by Subhash Ghai.

Grace saving was – Music and cinematography. Nothing much to ga ga over.

  10. nachiketha says:

you r having a very bad taste.

  11. newsdose says:

Yea, I’ve a bad taste and so does other critics ;)

  12. Shailesh says:

Yuvraj, same as Ghai’s other most films the richest person lots of money and no story any where. The best in the movie is the A. R. Rahman music. The first half of the movie is totally bored and nothing over there except songs, big show of nature and the Ghai’s showbiz. Second half is good to get mind easy to set that you got something worthfull. Happy ending. But all the means time waste movie. Anyone can appriciate music. Thats all. One more thing If any one wants to see acting then don’t go for movie because there is non of acting. I don’t understanding how these all big stars doing such a zero level acting.

  13. Dorro says:

There is nothing wrong with the review ,whatever said in it are exactly right.Anything good about the movie are good locations,Anil Kapoor’s acting and couple of good songs. The movie really looked outdated like it is said in the review. It’s really interesting to see these bad actors(katrina,Zayeed) survive in bollywood. And this thing can only happen in bollywood.Anymore movies like this can’t be tolerated.

  14. udit says:

Hi Very honest review I don’t know why I did not read this review before I wasted my money. Although chemistry between Boman and Salman is good but overall the movie is no go. Thanks

For Yuvvraaj fans, Yuvvraaj will be a flop.

    Q. Can Yuvvraaj make money?

    A. It has very little chance to make money, even recovery is a tough ask for the distributors. The producers have made money but most producers of big films make money as they fetch big prices.

i couldnt agree with you more dear new dose critic…. i mean wat in gods name was subhash ghai thinkin… i watched it last nyt n it is pathetic.. i actually walked off towards the end…. the editing is so bad that the movie dosent make sense or is very abrupt….. i think the saving grace is anil kapoor and ar rehmans music….

i cant understand how toi gave it 3 stars and teh only reason i went for it….

    stay away from yuvraj people….

  17. Saquib says:

I don’t know who is the reviewer of this site but what i want to say him is that i really like ur reviews…you have the courage to speak the truth and i like you coz u have that courage.
Yuvraaj simply sucks and i don’t know why Taran gave 3 stars to it….it actually deserves no stars at all.The newsdose reviews are not biased….keep up the good work

  18. navin says:

now I am agree with this review but totally oppose the rating give to music yuvv… it should be 3+ rating

in yuv… only music is good rest is really big time sucker and gahi one of them….

  19. newsdose says:

    @Saquib

    Thanks man, appreciate it.

    @navin

3+ rating just coz music was good? I don’t think so. We’re here to review the movie and not the music.

  20. kkhanna2020 says:

it’s a good film to watch, especially if you like musical films. anil and salman did really well in this film!

  21. Amit says:

    grt movie….must watch….superb chemistry between sal and kats…in all a grt entertainer…

  22. rajanpras says:

My view – the movie was not so bad after-all; the only saving grace I felt was the music. Yes it did take time to grow but when it did – I loved it. Picturization (especially) “Mastam Mastam’ could have been better.

  23. Sahil says:

great movie,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,lovely songs…..beautiful sets……..complimented by brilliant acting of salman khan and anil kapoor

  24. Manas says:

yuvvraaj is brilliant in every way and kats really wowed me with her improved acting

  25. Shekher says:

I also liked the movie. Music is good apart from one song. before watching the movie, i had got really bad reviews about the movie but i enjoyed the movie overall.

  26. Noopur says:

Hey guys, off late I hav read a lot of contradictory reviews about Yuvvraaj………so contradictory that if u hav not seen the movie….u wud find it hard to pick the right one…..beware of the negative publicity guys…….go n see the movie n then decide for yourself

  27. Kriti says:

Yuvvraaj is a good movie……but in terms of overall quality, ghai cud hav done better

  28. kkhanna2020 says:

Guys, did u read this interesting piece of news………The legendary painter, M F Hussain is so impressed by Ghai’s latest offering “Yuvvraaj” that not only has he watched it twice in the theatre but has also offered to make a painting on the movie…………..I think people who have not seen Yuvvraaj so far should take note of this and watch ‘Yuvvraaj’

  29. Hamida says:

i watched this movie despite everyone telling me not to. I wish i had listened this has to be the worst movie i have seen. What happened to Salman? he has become so terrible and so childish, only when he begged Boman’s character to save his brother is when he stepped up. Anil and the music is the only saving grace. 1st half could have been edited to 30 minutes. What a shame, i guess i have Gajini to look forward to

  30. kakar916 says:

I think dostana was gay ass movie. Yuvraaj is way better it gives you a lesson to learn. Dostana promotes people to be gay that is bullshit it tells your parents to except homo sexuality. New generation Indians think they are gettin too coo but they suck. They would watch anything to do with americas gone bad culture but cannot appreciate a film like yuvraaj. Nobody knows anything about acting period people just like to say there own crap and put people down. Every body acted well in Yuvraag, it was a good movie.

  31. kakar916 says:

And the charcters in the movie are the way they have been shown. Its not that salman and others didnt know how to act. Salmans character is kinda goofy person and katrina is someone born in europe dont know much hindi so it looks natural. Indian audience is stupid they think anil acted good because it is an autistic person. No thats not right everybody acted good. Now ima a punjabi n have been libing in us since I was a kid. So if u were to make a movie on me offcourse ima be the way that I am not that good in hindi just be the way I am. Thats the kinda characters the movie show. Everybody looks real salman, katrina, zayed, anil everybody.

  32. newsdose says:

See, all the critics can’t be wrong. Everyone thrashed the movie and it’s a big flop and shares second spot with Love Story 2050 for losing the most money, first being Drona. If you think Salman and Zayed acted good then you should seriously watch some good movies like A Wednesday or Rock On!! And please, don’t give excuse for Katrina’s bad acting. She is here to act and she can’t do that and just looks good in the movie then there is no use of her. She’s the one who promotes the idea that women are for eye-candy only in movies and it’s not good for female actors.

As for Dostana, it never prompted people to be gay and I’m actually wondering if you watched the same movie as others did. Moreover, gays are not from America, you should read some newspapers. And yeah, parents should accept (it’s not except) homosexuality. It’s natural.
