When you’re a director of a masterpiece of Indian Cinema then the expectations automatically become high from your next outing, and living up to those expectations is not an easy task but director Dibakar Banerjee, the man behind Khosla Ka Ghosla, makes it a cakewalk with his new movie Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!
Set in the capital of India, New Delhi, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is about the life of a superchor, Lucky, played by Abhay Deol, who makes stealing look like a walk in the park. He can steal anything, be it cars, TVs, music systems, tennis rackets, dry fruits, family photographs, or even a dog! And he can go to any length to do that. He mainly relies on his smartness to fool the security guards, policemen and even dogs.
The strongest points of the movie are the humor and the performances by the actors, to which we will come later. But first, let’s talk about the story line. Film starts off really well showing the teenage years of Lucky and his relationships with his dad, friends and his first girlfriend with whom he goes to roam around the city on a stolen scooter, yup girls make you do things which you never want to do, sigh!
Then we see him as a smartass thief who can steal two Mercedes in a single day, or steal a TV just by entering anyone’s home. Then there is his girlfriend, Sonal (Neetu Chandra) and her mom who keeps on asking him to bring appliances, like an electric toaster. And that’s where the story lacks the punch. There is no path breaking twist in the story which can make it lackadaisical to some people. All we see him stealing and stealing, sometimes for money and sometimes for revenge.
But, the first class humor of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! makes it a delightful watch. Comic lines are witty, situations are even funnier, and add to that the charm of Abhay Deol, this movie will definitely steal your heart. Performances are extra-ordinary and Abhay Deol, undoubtedly, steals the whole show because most of the movie depends on his shoulders only. This is by far, the best performance of his career and he looks so natural in the role. And his performance clearly shows how much a talented actor he is.
The other strong point of the movie is Paresh Rawal, who gets to depict three different roles in one movie and he doesn’t disappoint, not even one bit. Neetu Chandra is amiable as Abhay’s girlfriend and Archana Puran Singh as Dr. Handa’s (Paresh Rawal) wife suits the role. Manu Rishi (as Bangali), playing the sidekick of Lucky, is a nice performer, too.
But one special mention about Manjot Singh, playing as Young Lucky. He’s the one who’ll make you laugh more than anyone during the whole movie, even in his short role. I wish there was a little bit more of him.
One little thing that can go against Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is the lack of universal appeal in India. Most of the dialogues are typical Punjabi and Delhi style. And this can be difficult to comprehend for people from other states. But, I hope this doesn’t cause any problem.
Verdict
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is, undoubtedly, one of the best movies to come out this year. UTV Motion Pictures, scoring especially with the small budget movies this year, clearly have another win in their hand. It may not be at the level of Khosla Ka Ghosla, but it’s brilliant in its own ways. Dibakar Banerjee again showcases his talent as the director, and Abhay Deol, the showstopper of the movie, clearly deserves a lot of appreciation for his performance, after all, he made Lucky, India’s favorite and most loveable thief. Don’t miss it!
