Dev D

“Oh My God!” can be the first three words for many avid Bollywood fans, who are not much into intellectual stuff in movies and take pride in enjoying brainless movies like Singh is Kinng, Golmaal Returns, Welcome etc. There are lots of reasons why Dev.D would take you by surprise but we will talk about them later.

After the not so successful No Smoking, Anurag Kashyap returns with his new offering, Dev.D, starring Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill, Kalki Koechlin in the lead. It’s true that No Smoking was not a commercial success but it was a classic film in its own right. We should always remember that “Every good film is not a hit and every hit film is not good.” But, Anurag Kashyap is one man who has the balls to try something new while other directors are simply going for soft porn to make money by using eye candies like Katrina Kaif.

Synopsis

So, did Anurag Kashyap deliver a classic again? Well, to be honest, he almost did. Let’s get straight to the point and say that Dev.D is a very good film but could have been much more. The story of Dev.D is somewhat based on Devdas, Devandar Singh Dhillon (Abhay Deol), a rich spoilt brat, comes from London to meet the love of his life, Paro (Mahi Gill), but due to some misunderstanding, their relationship fall apart and it leads to downfall of Dev. On the other hand, there is Chanda, a sweet innocent girl who found herself in an mms scandal and her life becomes a total chaos just because of one small “mistake”.

Dev.D depicts the relationship of Dev with these 2 women and how they affect his life.

Strong points of Dev.D

One of the strongest points of Dev.D is its treatment and the way with which the relationships were portrayed. For example; when Dev returns from London and meet Paro, they don’t sing songs and run around trees dancing, instead they are all over each other, sexually, that is, which is far more mature and more realistic.

Another strong point of the movie would be its language; no filmi dialogues, just straight to the point talk like we do in everyday with friends, it doesn’t matter how cheap they sound, they are realistic. For example; a guy says to Dev “I’m very surprised ki aapne abhi tak Paro ki lee nahi”, which translates in English as “I’m very surprised to know that you haven’t fucked Paro till now.” Boys would pretty much understand most of the things.

Add to all that, the abuses, smoking, drinking, drugs, and other “non-social activities” which you won’t find in a typical Bollywood film, you’ll find it here, no wonder it got an “A” certificate from the censor board. And thank God they didn’t censor out anything.

Superb Performances

Abhay Deol shines again, after giving a powerful performance in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! He is, undoubtedly, one of the most under-rated actors of our generation with Jimmy Shergill. He comes out to be totally natural as a drug addict, drunker, a smoker, and a heartbroken lover. Expressions come out naturally, and his performance can really teach some actors a lesson or two in acting.

Now let’s talk about the new girl, Mahi Gill. Honestly, it was a really tough and daring role for a debutant, with all the abuses, and ahem… sexual scenes. One note to readers, those scenes are a work of art and never appear to be as a cheap B-grade flick. Credit should go to both Anurag and Mahi for making it believable. Maahie has a lot of potential as an actress and is certainly better than many actresses in Bollywood, Katrina Kaif anyone?

A character which was not explored fully

For me, character of Chanda was the most interesting one, but sadly, due to poor acting of Kalki Koechlin, it was not exploited to its full potential. She was not able to make the character convincing, partly due to poor dialogue delivery and poor dubbing. To Anurag, you should have gone for a better actress, seriously.

I would have loved to see more of Chanda, like the psychological impact of the whole incident on her which includes the suicide of her dad after the scandal. As it was clearly inspired from the famous DPS scandal, it was a perfect opportunity to tell the world about the feelings of the girl, and all the hardship she had to go through because of one mms. But sadly, a perfect opportunity was lost.

Music

Music of Dev.D is pure genius. Amit Trivedi is the future of Bollywood’s music industry. His tunes are not your usual disco numbers or club bangers. Emosanal Attyachar is one of the best tracks of all time, without a doubt. It’s already a big hit in the whole country, and all the credit goes to Amit for the unique tune and to Amitabh Bhatt, for his witty lyrics. A classic in every field, kudos to both of you.
My other favorites are Nayan Tarse, Paayaliya, and Emotional Attyachar (Rock Version).

Why film didn’t work

One of the main reasons why film fail to capture your attention for the whole time is its slow speed and unwanted scenes which serve no purpose in the development of the story, especially the last 20 minutes. Dev could have realized his faults in a better and fast way than all that travelling to various places. Dubbing, as I pointed out, in Chanda’s case was bad.

Verdict

Dev.D, in a nutshell, is a very honest effort from the director, Anurag Kashyap. From acting to dialogues to music, everything is perfect. The realistic situations especially that of the villages, and their authentic Punjabi accent, adds for more value to the film. Cinematography is top notch, and so is the directing. But the movie lacks in the editing and screenplay department, which could have made the film a lot shorter and to the point.

One more point I would like to mention here is that Anurag tried to over-do dramatic and imaginary stuff, especially in the last 20 minutes. I hope you’ll read this so I want you to tell you that I’ve a lot of respect for your work. You’re one of the finest directors of our generation and people like you are a ray of hope for our industry, but sometimes you should control your style and stick to the point instead of creating various situations and scenes to prove one point. I know it’s your choice but as they say “too much of anything is bad.” I’m really looking forward to your next project, Gulaal. Trailer was really promising and I hope both Dev.D and Gulaal become successful at the box office. Best of Luck.

6 things you can learn from Dev.D

1. A very little communication gap is enough to kill a relationship
2. Never let your ego come in between your relationship.
3. Don’t drink, smoke and never do drugs.
4. Learn to move on and never let go the new girl because of a previous girl who is someone with else now.
5. Learn to manage your money.
6. And the most important, never call your dad with his name, say “Papa” or “Dad”.

Rating –

Cast – Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill, Kalki Koechlin

Music Director – Amit Trivedi

Movie Director – Anurag Kashyap

Chandni Chowk To China

Chandni Chowk To China, 2009’s first big release, starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, and Ranvir Shorey, finally hit the big screen. Chandni Chowk To China was expected to break all the box office collections but the record collections of Ghajini set a new a bar for this film. Hype around the movie is good and we can expect some great news for Bollywood trade analysts.

Produced by Warner Bros, this is Nikhil Advani’s first directorial project after the not so good, Salaam-E-Ishq. And he doesn’t leave the opportunity to include a clipping of the film in this one. Looks like he also got the fever of mentioning his old work just like Yash Raj Films, Dhoom anyone? But let’s not talk about that, and let’s review Chandni Chowk To China.

Synopsis

Chandni Chowk To China is about the story of a nincompoop named Sidhu (Akshay Kumar), living in the crowded area of Chandni Chowk, and is a cook by profession. His problem is that he believes too much in luck and doesn’t want to work hard to achieve success. In short, he wants fame and money easily, just like our Indian youth, who audition for Roadies every year in search of fame. But our Sidhu doesn’t have Roadies, so he spends most of his time in buying lottery, and showing his hand to astrologers.

And with this, Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey) comes into the picture, who takes the advantage of Sidhu’s ingenuousness by stealing money from him. But Sidhu’s Dada (Mithun Chakraborty) tells him to work hard and not believe in this non-sense. Fair Enough.

But Sidhu’s destiny changes when some Chinese from a village come to India in search of their great warrior, Liu Shengh, who is supposed to be re-incarnated as Sidhu. They want him to kill the villain of the movie, Hojo, who is ruling their village. Phew! That’s just too much stuff. But there is a whole story of Deepika Padukone, playing the role of Saki, who believes that her father and twin sister, played also by her as Meow, are still alive. Don’t blame me if you’re confused.

Action is bad!

Enough of the story, let’s see how the film fairs. First things first, Chandni Chowk To China is a hybrid of Bollywood’s 80s melodrama and Chinese action movies. Some of the sequences remind me of the famous movie, Shaolin Soccer. Action is supposed to be the UPS of the movie since it is based on Kung-Fu, but it really comes close to our Rajnikant style action, for example; with one kick, Akshay Kumar can almost cause a Tsunami and blows the big boats in air, you know what I’m saying?

Confused director

Another thing which goes against the film is the confusion of the director. He doesn’t know if he wants to make it a comedy or a drama or non-brainer action film. For example; in one scene we see all of them trying to make us laugh and in the very next scene we see a river coming out of Deepika Padukone’s eyes in the form of tears, well not literally. There is no consistency in the scenes. In short there is a chaos of emotions in the movie.

Director also tries to spoof the shopping network programs, which we see often on various channels, but sadly, he falls flat on his face. There was nothing funny about it and Deepika ends up looking like an idiot, which maybe was intentional.

Technical Depratment

Dubbing is seriously third class, even if we cut out the Chinese part, dubbing sucks big time. You can clearly see them saying different dialogues or nothing at all, but you can still hear dialogues. That’s a shame! How about doing us a favor and start using sync-sound technology? Editing really needs some work and some scenes are really not required which increase the length of the movie for no reason.

Most of the songs are used as background scores, which is a good thing, except Chandni Chowk to China. Songs are good, which I already mentioned in my music review. The Rap song is used in the end credits. Chak Lein De is the best in the movie. Cinematography is great, and scenes of Great Wall of China are beautifully captured.

Performances are top class

Performance of Akshay Kumar is top notch. I’ve no complaints against him. He gives his 100% in the movie and his efforts clearly shows. Character of Sidhu looks totally natural on him, and his comedy talents shine again. Ranvir Shorey is not wasted in the movie, like he was wasted in Singh is Kinng, and he shows his talents again and proves why he is one of the best actors of our times. Mithun Da is good as usual, you can clearly see the same intensity in his role which we saw in Guru.

But Deepika Padukone shines as Meow. Her role oozes hotness in every frame and that Chinese make up and long hair, hotness at its best. She’s really good in action scenes, too. It looks like we found another action chick after Priyanka Chopra. I would love to see her doing more action roles. Her performance as Saki is average and sometimes, she really over acts.

Verdict

Chandni Chowk To China is not a great cinema, intellectually, but can be entertaining watch. It’s undoubtedly better than Singh is Kinng and Welcome. Akshay Kumar shines again, with Ranvir Shorey who gives a power house performance. Deepika Padukone is great as Meow but she really needs to work on crying scenes.

Technical department of the film fails, especially in editing and dubbing. About 15 minutes could have been cut easily. Movie is filled with a lot of loopholes and script writer is to be blamed here.

Nikhil Advani really needs to work on his direction. I wonder how he made Kal Ho Na Ho. If Karan Johar ghost directed the movie then I can understand. If they’re making a sequel of this then please improve the action scenes. Show us some Bourne style or James Bond style stuff.

And do watch out for the products they sell in the movie, a machine which can translate any language, an umbrella which can be used as a parachute and can also be used as protection against weapons, I only wonder what material they use because it really contradicts both the uses. And yeah, there is one machine which can make you dance, which is good for guys, who want to impress girls. Only if they were true, sigh!

Rating –

Cast – Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Ranvir Shorey

Music Director – Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Movie Director – Nikhil Advani

Billu Barber, Red Chillies production, is already making waves for its hot item numbers which feature top actresses of Bollywood; Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. First things first, Billu Barber is the film of Irrfan Khan and not Shahrukh Khan, which many people are assuming. It’s the first time that Pritam is giving music for Shahrukh’s production and same with Neeraj, who is giving background voice for Shahrukh Khan.

The soundtrack of Billu Barber comprises of 15 tracks, yes 15, and out of that, 7 are originals and the rest of the tracks are remixes. Well, the first thing that goes in favor of Billu Barber is the wide range of songs. From typical club bangers to village anthems, everything is in there. And for the first time after Jab We Met, songs don’t appear to be copy of South Korean artists, I hope it’s true, Pritam. Now, let’s review the soundtrack.

1. Marjaani

The opening track of the soundtrack, also the first promo of the movie, featuring Kareena Kapoor and Shahrukh Khan, is already a hit among the masses. Most of the credit should be given to Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan. The voice of Sukhwinder is perfect and Sunidhi adds her own magical touch. I don’t think any other singer can do so much justice to this number. Also, credit should be given to Pritam, for providing the rocking music.

Lyrics are top notch, but people who are not much used to Punjabi lyrics and the language, can find it difficult to understand the lyrics. But, when the music is so thumping, you hardly get a chance to think about the lyrics, if you’re in a club.

2. Love Mera Hit Hit

Love Mera Hit Hit, is undoubtedly, the biggest club number of the year, I don’t think any song in 2009 will be able to match its energy, and enthusiasm. Add to that super hot dance number of Deepika Padukone, Love Mera Hit Hit, is a sure shot hit. The real star of the song is, of course, Neeraj Shridhar. Tulsi Kumar, can be wrong choice for some, and honestly, I didn’t like her during the first listen. But, she grows on you gradually. Sunidhi or Shreya could have done a better job, considering Shreya Ghoshal did an awesome job in Latoo, in the soundtrack of Ghajini.

Music is of the highest quality, and sets the mood for a perfect dance number. What makes this song a contender for the national anthem of this year is the lyrics, especially on the chorus. Ashish Pandit and Mayur Puri have done a wonderful job with the lyrics and Pritam has done his job again.

3. You Get Me Rockin & Reeling

You Get Me Rockin & Reeling, supposedly to be performed by Priyanka Chopra and Shahrukh Khan can be a letdown to some. Unlike the first two songs, You Get Me Rockin & Reeling will not catch your attention during the first listen and it’ll take a lot of plays to grow on you. But, I think the music video of the song will change everything because if we go by the cover art of the album, music video of this song will be the best of the three.

Neeraj can’t do much of a job in this song because he doesn’t get so much scope to perform, and add to that some English verses, which were not required at all. The only high point of the song is the chorus, which surprisingly, is also used in another song in the album.

4. Ae Aa O

I don’t have really much to write about Ae Aa O, as it is not that original, but the guitar riffs in the starting rocks! Well, the song is basically about how great I’m. It’ll certainly appeal to those who think that they are the best and need some song to send out that message.

Music doesn’t have any consistency, sometimes it’s a total bore and sometimes, especially during the guitar riffs, it just blows you away. KK tries really hard to make it amiable but succeed to some extent, but the 5 minute length of the song kills it in the first place.

5. Jaoon Kahan

After 4 songs belonging to Shahrukh Khan, Jaoon Kahan is about the emotions of Irrfan Khan. Sung beautifully by Raahat Fateh Ali Khan, Jaoon Kahan is one of the best songs of the album. I’ve noticed that Raahat Fateh Ali Khan has a unique ability to take any average song to a whole new level with his voice, and Pritam knows it very well.

Lyrics clearly describe the emotions of Irrfan Khan, and all the credit goes Sayeed Quadri. The main backdrop of the song, can sometimes make you remember Teri Ore, from Singh is Kinng. Emotions are perfect and you’ll love this song, and honestly, you will not mind the length of the song.

6. Billoo Bhayankar

Billoo Bhayankar really tests the talent of Pritam and surprisingly, he passes with 100 out of 100 with this one. Billoo Bhayankar is not a chartbuster song, and some songs are never meant to be chartbusters, they are meant for critical acclaim. From singing style to lyrics to music and the music instruments, everything is unique.

The success of the song belongs to Gulzar, who wrote wonderful lyrics for the song, and probably the most difficult ones. Ajay Jhingaran, Raghuveer and Kalpana have done a brilliant job in rendering their voice to the song. It would certainly be a high point in the movie.

7. Khudaya Khair

Khudaya Khair is a typical romantic number but refreshing Soham Chakraborty, In Dino fame, is a surprise inclusion in the song and he is the one who make this song a worthwhile listen. Akriti Kakkar and Monali do a good job in supporting the vocals of Soham. Lyrics are fine and the chorus of this song is the same that of You Get Me Rockin & Reeling.

Verdict

Billu Barber is a clear winner for Pritam, who for the first time gives us some original music. Marjaani and Love Mera Hit Hit are the two number ones hits of 2009. Soundtrack comprises of critical material such as Billoo Bhayankar and Jaoon Kahan.

The rest of the three original songs are average and only one of them has the ability to be a hit when the music video will be released. The biggest downfall of the album is the 8 remixes. If I gave an extra star to Dostana for not including any remix then I’ve to cut 1 star from Billu Barber for including so many remixes. Honestly, there was no need of so many remixes.

Nevertheless, Billu Barber is a great album and it’s a good start for Billu Barber, the movie.

Rating –

Cast – Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, Shahrukh Khan.

Music Director – Pritam

Movie Director – Priyadarshan

After 24/7 promotions, continuous interviews, and giving youth the Ghajini hairstyle by acting as a barber, Aamir Khan’s most awaited and commercial movie till date, Ghajini, finally got released. Now, the hype around the movie was superb, full marks to the marketing team of Ghajini for that. So, the question is, does it leave to the hype? No, I don’t think so.

There is a lot of discussion going around if Ghajini is a copy of Memento, and believe me, it is. And we’ll talk about it in the end of the post. But first, let me give you a quick review because I’ll forget everything in 15 minutes just like Aamir Khan in the movie.

Story is about a business tycoon, Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan), who is suffering from anterograde amnesia, and is looking for revenge, why? Well, because his girlfriend, Kalpana (Asin) was murdered by the villain guy, Ghajini. As you can see there is nothing special in the story department.

Let’s talk about the treatment of the movie. It’s clearly following the Tamil Cinema where action is over the top and our hero can beat anyone, no matter how many they are, you know Rajnikanth style, as popularly known to Bollywood audience. This is the very first mistake of this movie.

Director of the movie, A. R. Murugadoss, is a South Indian movie director, and he thinks that this type of stuff will work in Bollywood, but sorry to say sir, we’re not living in the 80s anymore. We want some real action, and not this non-sense.

This brings me to the villain, Ghajini (Pradeep Rawat), wearing white pants and jewelry. I mean, c’mon! When Hollywood is giving us cool villains like The Joker, here we have a moron Ghajini, who can’t even fight the hero. We really need a better quality of criminals. The scenes which were supposed to be intense drama, were the ones in which people were laughing. That explains a lot!

The main problem of Ghajini is the incorrect presentation of the disease, anterograde amnesia. The thing which is the main plot point of the story is the weakest link of the movie. There is no consistence in portraying the disease. Sanjay can forget things anytime he wants, irrespective of the limited time frame that is 15 minutes. For example; he can spend more than 15 minutes killing the bad guys but will forget what he is doing only after he killed all of them.

Biggest loophole

Story is filled with loopholes. In the movie, they show us that Aamir doesn’t remember the death of Asin and he only comes to know about it when he reads the tattoos on his body. Fair enough. But the problem arises in the long run.

Now, if we go by the disease, he should forget about her death every 15 minutes, but he doesn’t. He should remind himself every 15 minutes that his girlfriend got murdered. But NO! He’ll forget everything but not this. He’ll forget it only when he sleeps. What kind of BS is this?

And the last scene, how can he remember that his girlfriend is no more? He is happy, enjoying a birthday party, even forgetting the girl who helped her, but doesn’t forget that Asin is no more. As I said earlier, there is no consistency in the disease. Ghajini falls flat when it comes to some logic.

Music is average and songs are forced. If you leave out Kaise Mujhe, there is not one song which comes out natural. The only saving grace of the movie is the love story of Aamir Khan and Asin. It’s simple, innocent and beautiful. For me, it’s the second best love story of 2008 after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Performances

Now let’s talk about the performances. Aamir Khan did all he can do to save this film. He put all of his efforts but there is still lacking the punch. He scores 100 out of 100 for the love story part but when it comes to action, sorry to say, he looks like a Sunny Deol wannabe.

Screaming, running and beating up the guys, no emotions as such. Well, I respect Aamir for his acting and his choice of roles but this time, he got it totally wrong. I know you want to do commercial cinema, but check out some good scripts in lieu of this trash. You’re not Akshay Kumar, so leave the brainless stuff to him.

Asin the best part of Ghajini, people totally loved her. She has a great future in Bollywood because she has a great control over Hindi and her expressions are natural. There will be a tough fight for best debut actress awards this year.

Was there Jiah Khan too in the movie? Damn, this 15 minute thing is really catching up to me. Now, I can see why she was not in the promotions. No acting skills, poor dialogue delivery, another Katrina Kaif wannabe.

Comparison of Memento and Ghajini

As I promised, let’s see how Ghajini and Memento are similar. People, who haven’t seen Memento, please don’t bother replying to this part because you don’t know what you’re dealing with.

Ghajini steals all the main plot points of Memento i.e. Anterograde Amnesia, hero seeking revenge, murder of his love, maps on the wall, a girl helping the hero, and not to forget the Polaroid Camera, they didn’t even bother to change the camera, so stupid! Now if you don’t call it stealing the idea of the movie then I don’t know what you call it.

For those who’ll say that the treatment is different in Ghajini then let me give you an example. Consider an exam and one student is copying answers from another student and then suddenly, teacher catches him. To his defense he says that, “Teacher, our answers maybe same but our hand writing or presentation is different.”

This is what the director and Aamir Khan is doing. A. R. Murugadoss said that he just read the plot line of Memento or saw the trailer and then wrote his script. Well sir, tomorrow you’ll also say that you just heard the name of Memento and wrote a script of your own and surprisingly, it had a lot of similarities. Give us a break!

You can just totally copy “Hitch” and make it “Partner” or thousands of other Hollywood movies into Bollywood but not Memento. Memento is an all time classic and people from all over the globe respects it a lot. Check out imdb.com rating for Memento, you’ll find out yourself.

I’m pissed off because it’ll give such a bad name to Bollywood when people from other countries watch it.

I’m more worried about Christopher Nolan, the guy who made Memento and The Dark Knight. This movie will surely make a bad impression about Bollywood on him. Ok, fine, you copied the movie then at least have the decency to give the credit to Nolan brothers for working so hard over the script. Shameful!!

One thing to Mr. A. R. Murugadoss, you can copy the movie and claim it to be yours but you can never match the respect that Nolan has, not even in your wildest dreams. And please, don’t come to Bollywood with this trash.

Verdict

Ghajini is your total masala film, with all the elements in one package. The script is fully flawed and makes no sense. Aamir Khan really tries to save this film with his superb acting but Ghajini works only because of Asin. If you take out her from the movie then there is nothing left in the movie. A. R. Murugadoss really needs a movie making lesson in Bollywood otherwise there is no future.

In short, Ghajini is dumbness at its best.

For those people who think that this movie is too good then do yourself a favor and watch Memento. You’ll come to know what real movie making is all about. I’m giving the link to IMDB page of Memento below the post so that you can check out the reaction of the public and the ratings.
