If I didn’t have a passion to write reviews on this blog and some extra cash, I would have never got out of my home to watch Pyaar Impossible in this weather. Seriously, what was I thinking? I guess we all make mistakes. Anyway, coming back to the review, Pyaar Impossible stars Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra, who also wrote the script. Directed by Jugal Hansraj, this movie is one big yawn.

Pyaar Impossible Movie Review

Story

The story of movie revolves around the life of Abhay, played by Uday, who is your average geek in college and not so surprisingly, in love with the hottest girl in college, Alisha (Priyanka Chopra). But, he is not able to confess it because Alisha’s dad makes her leave the college and come back to India.

7 years forward, Abhay is still in love with her but he has made a unique operating system which can run all the operating systems in the world. XP, Vista, Linux, Mac etc, you name it, he has it. Good thing for the geeks if it was real. But, his software is stolen by Dino Morea. And thus, begins his journey to get his software back. On his journey, he also meets Alisha again. Will he find his true love? Not hard to predict.

Technical Department

First things first, this movie is filled with clichés. Jugal Hansraj clearly doesn’t have an eye for details. And as a result of this, we are stuck with a depressing love story which could have been much better. And this brings me back to my next point. I don’t know if it’s me only, but, in my opinion, this movie could have been much much better and refreshing if the writer, Uday Chopra, had done some homework. Or probably, he had given this story to some good writer. Writing is totally juvenile with only couple of scenes which bring a smile to your face. Moreover, it’s highly predictable.

One more thing, why does it always happen that if you want to show a popular girl in college then she has to be a rockstar? Why can’t she be a chess player or a debater? Can’t it be beauty with brains? But, I think there is no glamour in being a chess player or a debater.

Music, I’ve to say, is really good. The duo of Salim-Sulaiman has done a wonderful job by giving some peppy tunes, which will be with you even after leaving the cinema. I recommend you to buy the CD now, but we know how you’re going to get the songs. Cinematography was nice

Acting Department

Let’s start the acting department with Priyanka Chopra. She was top notch, to say the least. Very natural and confident. But, I’ve to comment on her dresses. I wonder if her character wears any normal clothes like we do and especially, since she is a divorced mother. Don’t worry about spoiler, it’s hardly any. Mini skirts and showing cleavage in office. I also wonder if there is any dress code in the offices of Singapore, coz if there isn’t, then I’m applying for a job in Singapore straight away. She was looking really really hot. Gorgeous at its best.

And, then we have Uday Chopra. I’ve to be honest here, you don’t have any acting skill. I think you’re lucky that you have your own production company and a brother who is ready to spend money on you while, there are many talented writers and actors never get a break

Anupam Kher and Dino Morea in their supporting roles were ok. Nothing special. And what’s the deal with Alisha’s daughter? She doesn’t look 6 at all and is annoying.

Final Verdict

If there is one reason to watch Pyaar Impossible then it’s Priyanka Chopra. I bet guys are going to love it. Watching her on big screen is a delight and I don’t think she has looked this gorgeous in any other movie. So guys, check it out, but only if some fool are paying for your ticket. As for the girls, they are stuck with Uday Chopra, who shouldn’t come on the big screen, unless it’s Dhoom 3.

Some love stories have the charm to capture your attention within 1 minute and to hook you till the end. But, this movie is nothing like that. And, as far as the hit status for Pyaar Impossibe is concerned, it is anything but possible.

Cast – Priyanka Chopra, Uday Chopra

Billu Barber or Billu, as many would say, especially people from the Salon and Beauty Parlour associations, is ‘delightful’, if I’ve to describe it in one word. Starring Irfan Khan, Lara Dutta in the lead and with Shahrukh Khan in a supporting role, Billu Barber is a perfect film to watch in this love season.

Synopsis

Directed by Priyadarshan, and produced by Shahrukh’s own production house, Red Chilies Entertainment, Billu Barber is a film about a barber, Billu (Irrfan Khan), living in a village called “Budbuda” in Uttar Pradesh. Along with him, there is his wife Bindiya (Lara Dutta), their two kids, and a whole village which is filled with nincompoops. Billu’s life is not that great, to say the least, he has no money to pay the fees of kids education, no money to buy new chair, scissor, and even a comb for his shop. But, the optimistic Billu carries on his life until Sahir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) comes to the village for shooting.

The whole village goes crazy and the word goes around that Billu and Sahir are childhood friends. And this is when the whole life of Billu turns upside down. People who never helped him suddenly start showering him with favors, even the school authorities who are ready to pay the fees from their school fund, but only on one condition, Billu has to talk to Sahir and invite him to their school function. But our Billu is too ashamed to go in front of him.

Story is simple

The story of Billu Barber is simple, and that was what required for this film. It’s also predictable and you can guess the ending of the film before even entering the cinema hall but you’ll never lose your interest in the film, particularly because of the performances and the witty dialogues.

Script is strong

The script is top notch but with very few flaws here and there. One of the strongest points of the script is that it is straight to point and it never alienates from its main point, which is the difference between the worlds of Shahrukh Khan and Irrfan Khan, which was very essential to create the mood of the film. Billu Barber is filled with many funny moments, especially the one involving Om Puri and Asrani when Om Puri comes to Billu’s shop to gift him a chair. I won’t tell the scene because if I did then it would kill the fun.

Music is good

Music, as I earlier said in the music review, is very good. Marjani and Love Mera Hit Hit are already chartbusters in the whole India. You Get Me Rockin & Reeling, which sounds average on the first listening is good, too, all thanks to hot Priyanka Chopra. The other songs which shine are Billu Bhayankar and Jaoon Kahan. Ae Aa O was really not required in the film. Background score was above average.

They censored out the words “Hajaam” and “Barber” from the song Billu Bhayankar which really killed the song. I don’t see what’s so bad about these words.

The Three Divas

If you’ve Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra doing item numbers in a single movie then whistles are always expected and that is what exactly happened when all three came on screen. Out of all three, it’s Priyanka who takes the cake. Priyanka is hotness at its best in “You Get Me Rockin & Reeling”. The whole “glamour quotient” which was absent in the film was fulfilled with these three songs.

Outstanding Performances

Irrfan Khan, as Billu, shines in the movie and is the show stealer. Appearing as a lead actor in a commercial film for the first time, Irrfan Khan gives his best and it shows on screen. He is undoubtedly, one of the best actors of our time, and is no longer under-rated. Watch out for that scene when he calls in Shahrukh’s hotel in hope to talk to him, and check out his expressions and the modulation in his voice, mind blowing!

Lara Dutta is amiable in her role and shows her acting talent. The other heroines who refused the role might be regretting it now after watching her performance. The child artists playing the kids in the movie are confident and their comic timing is perfect. Their relationship with Irrfan and Lara looks authentic.

Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, and Asrani are good, too. They handle the comedy department of the film very well.

The Last Twenty Minutes

It’s the last twenty minutes when Shahrukh comes and drop the “emosanal (emotional) bomb” on you when he gives a speech to school kids where he recalls his childhood days and his friend Billu. Role of Shahrukh is not that big and in most of the part, he is playing himself. But at the end, he shows why he is the best actor in Bollywood, along with Aamir Khan, and why we cry every time he gets emotional.

That speech and the meeting of Irrfan and Shahrukh is the high point of the movie. Often we see people talking on their cell phones during the movie, but in those 20 minutes, no one talked. If they were getting calls, they didn’t answer it. Those 20 minutes truly absorb you in the movie, and it makes sure that you cry.

Negative points of Billu Barber

If film lacks somewhere then it is the first half of the film, maybe because the attention given to the role of Shahrukh Khan which was not required. First half should have been totally about Billu and his life and how he copes up with all the stress.

Dubbing is also not good, you can clearly see them saying things which are not audible and the timing is not perfect. It’s the high time we adopt the sync sound technology and trash the dubbing system. Editing could have better and some places. Background score could have been better especially during the ending.

Verdict –

Billu Barber is a very simple, sweet and innocent film portraying the power of friendship. It’s undoubtedly Priyadarshan’s best work till date. Billu Barber belongs to Billu, Irrfan Khan, for his powerful performance, and he is, indubitably, one of the strongest contenders for the best actor award next year. Lara Data and the supporting cast shines in their roles.

Shahrukh Khan in his small role hits all the right notes and he plays his best cards during the ending where he lifts the standard of the movie to a whole new level with his powerful speech.
Billu Barber is a must watch film, especially since it’s released near Valentine’s Day.

Take your friends, girlfriend, boyfriend, or your family along with you and enjoy this sweet film.

Rating –

Cast – Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, Shahrukh Khan

Music Director – Pritam

Chandni Chowk To China

Chandni Chowk To China, 2009’s first big release, starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, and Ranvir Shorey, finally hit the big screen. Chandni Chowk To China was expected to break all the box office collections but the record collections of Ghajini set a new a bar for this film. Hype around the movie is good and we can expect some great news for Bollywood trade analysts.

Produced by Warner Bros, this is Nikhil Advani’s first directorial project after the not so good, Salaam-E-Ishq. And he doesn’t leave the opportunity to include a clipping of the film in this one. Looks like he also got the fever of mentioning his old work just like Yash Raj Films, Dhoom anyone? But let’s not talk about that, and let’s review Chandni Chowk To China.

Synopsis

Chandni Chowk To China is about the story of a nincompoop named Sidhu (Akshay Kumar), living in the crowded area of Chandni Chowk, and is a cook by profession. His problem is that he believes too much in luck and doesn’t want to work hard to achieve success. In short, he wants fame and money easily, just like our Indian youth, who audition for Roadies every year in search of fame. But our Sidhu doesn’t have Roadies, so he spends most of his time in buying lottery, and showing his hand to astrologers.

And with this, Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey) comes into the picture, who takes the advantage of Sidhu’s ingenuousness by stealing money from him. But Sidhu’s Dada (Mithun Chakraborty) tells him to work hard and not believe in this non-sense. Fair Enough.

But Sidhu’s destiny changes when some Chinese from a village come to India in search of their great warrior, Liu Shengh, who is supposed to be re-incarnated as Sidhu. They want him to kill the villain of the movie, Hojo, who is ruling their village. Phew! That’s just too much stuff. But there is a whole story of Deepika Padukone, playing the role of Saki, who believes that her father and twin sister, played also by her as Meow, are still alive. Don’t blame me if you’re confused.

Action is bad!

Enough of the story, let’s see how the film fairs. First things first, Chandni Chowk To China is a hybrid of Bollywood’s 80s melodrama and Chinese action movies. Some of the sequences remind me of the famous movie, Shaolin Soccer. Action is supposed to be the UPS of the movie since it is based on Kung-Fu, but it really comes close to our Rajnikant style action, for example; with one kick, Akshay Kumar can almost cause a Tsunami and blows the big boats in air, you know what I’m saying?

Confused director

Another thing which goes against the film is the confusion of the director. He doesn’t know if he wants to make it a comedy or a drama or non-brainer action film. For example; in one scene we see all of them trying to make us laugh and in the very next scene we see a river coming out of Deepika Padukone’s eyes in the form of tears, well not literally. There is no consistency in the scenes. In short there is a chaos of emotions in the movie.

Director also tries to spoof the shopping network programs, which we see often on various channels, but sadly, he falls flat on his face. There was nothing funny about it and Deepika ends up looking like an idiot, which maybe was intentional.

Technical Depratment

Dubbing is seriously third class, even if we cut out the Chinese part, dubbing sucks big time. You can clearly see them saying different dialogues or nothing at all, but you can still hear dialogues. That’s a shame! How about doing us a favor and start using sync-sound technology? Editing really needs some work and some scenes are really not required which increase the length of the movie for no reason.

Most of the songs are used as background scores, which is a good thing, except Chandni Chowk to China. Songs are good, which I already mentioned in my music review. The Rap song is used in the end credits. Chak Lein De is the best in the movie. Cinematography is great, and scenes of Great Wall of China are beautifully captured.

Performances are top class

Performance of Akshay Kumar is top notch. I’ve no complaints against him. He gives his 100% in the movie and his efforts clearly shows. Character of Sidhu looks totally natural on him, and his comedy talents shine again. Ranvir Shorey is not wasted in the movie, like he was wasted in Singh is Kinng, and he shows his talents again and proves why he is one of the best actors of our times. Mithun Da is good as usual, you can clearly see the same intensity in his role which we saw in Guru.

But Deepika Padukone shines as Meow. Her role oozes hotness in every frame and that Chinese make up and long hair, hotness at its best. She’s really good in action scenes, too. It looks like we found another action chick after Priyanka Chopra. I would love to see her doing more action roles. Her performance as Saki is average and sometimes, she really over acts.

Verdict

Chandni Chowk To China is not a great cinema, intellectually, but can be entertaining watch. It’s undoubtedly better than Singh is Kinng and Welcome. Akshay Kumar shines again, with Ranvir Shorey who gives a power house performance. Deepika Padukone is great as Meow but she really needs to work on crying scenes.

Technical department of the film fails, especially in editing and dubbing. About 15 minutes could have been cut easily. Movie is filled with a lot of loopholes and script writer is to be blamed here.

Nikhil Advani really needs to work on his direction. I wonder how he made Kal Ho Na Ho. If Karan Johar ghost directed the movie then I can understand. If they’re making a sequel of this then please improve the action scenes. Show us some Bourne style or James Bond style stuff.

And do watch out for the products they sell in the movie, a machine which can translate any language, an umbrella which can be used as a parachute and can also be used as protection against weapons, I only wonder what material they use because it really contradicts both the uses. And yeah, there is one machine which can make you dance, which is good for guys, who want to impress girls. Only if they were true, sigh!

Rating –

Cast – Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Ranvir Shorey

Music Director – Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Movie Director – Nikhil Advani

Billu Barber, Red Chillies production, is already making waves for its hot item numbers which feature top actresses of Bollywood; Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. First things first, Billu Barber is the film of Irrfan Khan and not Shahrukh Khan, which many people are assuming. It’s the first time that Pritam is giving music for Shahrukh’s production and same with Neeraj, who is giving background voice for Shahrukh Khan.

The soundtrack of Billu Barber comprises of 15 tracks, yes 15, and out of that, 7 are originals and the rest of the tracks are remixes. Well, the first thing that goes in favor of Billu Barber is the wide range of songs. From typical club bangers to village anthems, everything is in there. And for the first time after Jab We Met, songs don’t appear to be copy of South Korean artists, I hope it’s true, Pritam. Now, let’s review the soundtrack.

1. Marjaani

The opening track of the soundtrack, also the first promo of the movie, featuring Kareena Kapoor and Shahrukh Khan, is already a hit among the masses. Most of the credit should be given to Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan. The voice of Sukhwinder is perfect and Sunidhi adds her own magical touch. I don’t think any other singer can do so much justice to this number. Also, credit should be given to Pritam, for providing the rocking music.

Lyrics are top notch, but people who are not much used to Punjabi lyrics and the language, can find it difficult to understand the lyrics. But, when the music is so thumping, you hardly get a chance to think about the lyrics, if you’re in a club.

2. Love Mera Hit Hit

Love Mera Hit Hit, is undoubtedly, the biggest club number of the year, I don’t think any song in 2009 will be able to match its energy, and enthusiasm. Add to that super hot dance number of Deepika Padukone, Love Mera Hit Hit, is a sure shot hit. The real star of the song is, of course, Neeraj Shridhar. Tulsi Kumar, can be wrong choice for some, and honestly, I didn’t like her during the first listen. But, she grows on you gradually. Sunidhi or Shreya could have done a better job, considering Shreya Ghoshal did an awesome job in Latoo, in the soundtrack of Ghajini.

Music is of the highest quality, and sets the mood for a perfect dance number. What makes this song a contender for the national anthem of this year is the lyrics, especially on the chorus. Ashish Pandit and Mayur Puri have done a wonderful job with the lyrics and Pritam has done his job again.

3. You Get Me Rockin & Reeling

You Get Me Rockin & Reeling, supposedly to be performed by Priyanka Chopra and Shahrukh Khan can be a letdown to some. Unlike the first two songs, You Get Me Rockin & Reeling will not catch your attention during the first listen and it’ll take a lot of plays to grow on you. But, I think the music video of the song will change everything because if we go by the cover art of the album, music video of this song will be the best of the three.

Neeraj can’t do much of a job in this song because he doesn’t get so much scope to perform, and add to that some English verses, which were not required at all. The only high point of the song is the chorus, which surprisingly, is also used in another song in the album.

4. Ae Aa O

I don’t have really much to write about Ae Aa O, as it is not that original, but the guitar riffs in the starting rocks! Well, the song is basically about how great I’m. It’ll certainly appeal to those who think that they are the best and need some song to send out that message.

Music doesn’t have any consistency, sometimes it’s a total bore and sometimes, especially during the guitar riffs, it just blows you away. KK tries really hard to make it amiable but succeed to some extent, but the 5 minute length of the song kills it in the first place.

5. Jaoon Kahan

After 4 songs belonging to Shahrukh Khan, Jaoon Kahan is about the emotions of Irrfan Khan. Sung beautifully by Raahat Fateh Ali Khan, Jaoon Kahan is one of the best songs of the album. I’ve noticed that Raahat Fateh Ali Khan has a unique ability to take any average song to a whole new level with his voice, and Pritam knows it very well.

Lyrics clearly describe the emotions of Irrfan Khan, and all the credit goes Sayeed Quadri. The main backdrop of the song, can sometimes make you remember Teri Ore, from Singh is Kinng. Emotions are perfect and you’ll love this song, and honestly, you will not mind the length of the song.

6. Billoo Bhayankar

Billoo Bhayankar really tests the talent of Pritam and surprisingly, he passes with 100 out of 100 with this one. Billoo Bhayankar is not a chartbuster song, and some songs are never meant to be chartbusters, they are meant for critical acclaim. From singing style to lyrics to music and the music instruments, everything is unique.

The success of the song belongs to Gulzar, who wrote wonderful lyrics for the song, and probably the most difficult ones. Ajay Jhingaran, Raghuveer and Kalpana have done a brilliant job in rendering their voice to the song. It would certainly be a high point in the movie.

7. Khudaya Khair

Khudaya Khair is a typical romantic number but refreshing Soham Chakraborty, In Dino fame, is a surprise inclusion in the song and he is the one who make this song a worthwhile listen. Akriti Kakkar and Monali do a good job in supporting the vocals of Soham. Lyrics are fine and the chorus of this song is the same that of You Get Me Rockin & Reeling.

Verdict

Billu Barber is a clear winner for Pritam, who for the first time gives us some original music. Marjaani and Love Mera Hit Hit are the two number ones hits of 2009. Soundtrack comprises of critical material such as Billoo Bhayankar and Jaoon Kahan.

The rest of the three original songs are average and only one of them has the ability to be a hit when the music video will be released. The biggest downfall of the album is the 8 remixes. If I gave an extra star to Dostana for not including any remix then I’ve to cut 1 star from Billu Barber for including so many remixes. Honestly, there was no need of so many remixes.

Nevertheless, Billu Barber is a great album and it’s a good start for Billu Barber, the movie.

Rating –

Cast – Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, Shahrukh Khan.

Music Director – Pritam

Movie Director – Priyadarshan

Dostana
Staggering is the first word that comes to mind while describing Dostana. Karan Johar’s latest venture, directed by debutant, Tarun Mansukhani, is a trend setter in Bollywood. It breaks all the rules that our industry follows and gives you a fully blown entertainer. Dostana is also special because it shows that a film doesn’t have to be brainless in order to become funny.

Jokes are hilarious, coupled with witty one liners, like “Mujhe mila only shuk but no f*ck”.

Add to that superb performances by everyone in the film. Dostana is meant for our Youngistan and by the response from the crowd, they loved it.

It’s very hard to find film like Dostana these days. It is easily one of the best films to come out this year. Dostana scores in every department, be it the cinematography, direction, music or the performances, it has everything.

One more refreshing change is that Dostana treats guys like sex objects instead of girls. Body of John Abraham is fully exploited and I’m pretty sure girls loved it after listening to the claps and whistles during the movie.

Now, let’s come to the subject of the movie, which is very unusual for Bollywood and that is “Love between two guys”, or do we call them gays? Dostana treats the subject very lightly and doesn’t offer any moral values in the movie and that’s a pretty impressive move by the director. Moreover, it doesn’t offend gays and is not like those movies in which gays are portrayed as a disease to our society.

When it comes to performances, Abhishek Bachchan steals the whole show. After a disappointing Drona, Abhi is back on track and that too with a bang. It’s one of his best performances of his career, only after Guru and moreover, it can be a turning point in his career. His comic timing is perfect and it rubbishes the arguments in which people say that he has only one expression on his face.

John Abraham, who came after a year, is fabulous, too. This role clearly shows how good an actor he is. Add to that his marvelous physique which any boy will crave for, Dostana is big hit for John.

His chemistry with Abhishek was superb and that was really crucial because they were the protagonists of the film and with the gay angle, chemistry was the main thing.

Dostana

Priyanka Chopra looks mind-blowing in the movie. If you thought Fashion was her best thing, think again! Priyanka takes it to whole next level both with her looks and performance. And how can we forget the scene in which she wears Golden swimsuit? I mean, you’ve to see the reaction of boys. Even girls were whistling and that’s the magic of Priyanka.

Kirron Kher, who plays the mom of Abhishek, is too good. Even with her short role, she makes an impact on you. Too bad her role is very small. And how can we forget Boman Irani? His role as a gay chief editor of a magazine is well written. Do watch out for the scene in which Kirron Kher catches his son, Abhishek, dancing with Boman Irani. A pure LOL.

And the last man, Bobby Deol, is surprisingly in good form. I heard many reviewers saying that he has a guest role which I don’t agree with. He plays an important role in the development of the story and has a big role.

Music of the film is top class. Maa Da Laadla is the best song in the movie. One better thing about the movie is that most of the songs are used as background scores just like in Hollywood movies and thus, they don’t seem to be forced. Locations are superb (seriously, I’m running out of adjectives).

Director of the movie, Tarun Mansukhani, has a lot of potential and the one to watch out for after Neeraj Pandey, who directed “A Wednesday.”

One thing which doesn’t work for the movie is the inconsistency of the pace of the movie, particularly involving the love angles of John, Priyanka, and Abhishek. I think editor should be blamed for this, because 15 minutes from the film could have been easily cut out.

Verdict – Dostana is an entertainer which you can’t afford to miss. It’s a must watch for everyone, especially for the teenagers. If you’re fed-up of brainless comedies then this movie is a treat for you. These 2 hours and 15 minutes are the ones which you’ll cherish even after weeks watching the film. As we say in our Bollywood style, “Dostana is a Full Paisa Vasool film.” Highly recommended!

Fashion

First thing first, Fashion is all about women. An industry where most of the movies are male oriented, finding a movie where ladies give extra-ordinary performances and not being just eye-candies is a rare occasion. Under the creative hands of National Award winning director, Madhur Bhandarkar, who is the master-mind behind movies like Page 3 and Corporate, Fashion comes out and hits you hard with the amount of realism it has.

From casting couch to models taking drugs, from wardrobe malfunction to tremulous relationships, Fashion has everything except the gay kiss scene which Madhur cut out.

Fashion is about a girl from Chandigarh, Meghna Mathur played by Priyanka Chopra, who aspires to be a super-model and comes to Mumbai against her father’s wish. In a city where thousands of people come every day to achieve fame, finding your spot is not an easy task and that too in the Fashion industry. With her competitive attitude and killer looks, Meghna reaches the top with the help of her friends, throwing aside Shonali Gujral (Kangna Ranaut), who is the current show stopper in the fashion industry.

So, does Madhur deliever an outstanding film this time? Let’s find out.

Good Points about Fashion

1. Acting by the ladies – The strongest point of the movie is, undoubtedly, performances by the leading ladies especially that of Priyanka Chopra. This is a role for which any Bollywood actress can die, well not literally. Priyanka finally hits the right chord this time after giving a series of flops. Get ready for award functions darling, 2008 belongs to you. I hope Katrina Kaif will watch this and learn some acting.

The newcomer in the movie, Mugdha Godse, who is playing a role of an unsuccessful model, is a nice surprise. She is confident and can give a run for money to any actress out there.

Kangna performs well as a drug addict and a successful model. But, the modulation in her voice is surely missing which kind of ruins her performance. But, she is the one who walks with full confidence and attitude on the ramp. I totally loved it. Moreover, the wardrobe malfunction scene was brilliantly performed by her.

2. Direction and Cinematography – Indubitably, direction of Fashion by Madhur is top class and keeps you glued to your seat for the whole time. Scenes are beautifully shot and every frame of the movie looks extravagant, thanks to Mahesh Limaye, who is the man behind cinematography.

3. Background Score – Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is haunting which sets the tone for the film and plays an important role in the movie. Songs are nice, especially Mar Jawaan.

4. Realism – Fashion is all about realism and Madhur doesn’t shy away from anything. The best thing I liked about the movie is the portrayal of gay designers. Conundrum of male models to sleep with gay designers in order to get a show and condition of a mother whose son is a gay fashion designer and doesn’t want to marry are brilliantly shown. Drugs and booze are added bonus to the movie.

Bad points about Fashion

1. Slow pace of the movie – When a movie is about 2 hrs and 40 minutes+ long then at least you expect a fast paced movie from the director just like in the case of The Dark Knight but you’ll be disappointed here. About 30+ minutes can be easily cut from Fashion which has no significance in the development of the story and the characters. It’ll surely test your patience.

2. Dubbing – Alright, you’ll not hear complaints about this in other reviews as they don’t discuss technical stuff that much. But, I want to point out the serious problem with dubbing here. Pathetic can be the right word for dubbing of Fashion.

Dialogues are not in sync, and no attention has been paid to the small talk between people. I know most of you don’t care about such minute details but me, as a movie junkie, I do pay attention to such stuff. Why doesn’t Bollywood adopt the sync sound method to record everything on the shooting itself, just like Hollywood?

3. Too many gays – I know many male fashion designers are gays, but seriously, in Fashion, every male designer is being depicted as gay.

4. Arbaaz Khan – Arbaaz Khan is playing the role of Abhijit Sarin, a fashion business tycoon. The role is long and can’t be described as a guest appearance and has a lot of significance in the road to success of Priyanka’s character. And clearly, Arbaaz was not the right choice for this role. He doesn’t show the attitude which was required for this role.

Verdict – Fashion is truly an outstanding experience thanks to brilliant performances and stirring direction by Madhur Bhandarkar. But the slow pace and the length definitely kills some fun from the movie.

Rating –

Cast – Kangna Ranaut, Priyanka Chopra, Arbaaz Khan, and Mugdha Godse

Music Director – Salim-Sulaiman

Movie Director – Madhur Bhandarkar

Dostana Movie Review – 4 stars Click here to read

Dostana
Dostana, Karan Johar’s new adventure as a producer, is about to hit theaters pretty soon and the start looks promising with a nice movie soundtrack. Vishal-Shekhar, the men behind the soundtrack finally hit the right chord this time. Dostana has a fresh feel which certainly appeal to the youngistan. The current play count at Last.fm is an attestation to the success of the soundtrack.

1. Jaane Kyon

Jaane Kyon is the catchiest song of 2008 hands down. The power of this song lies in its simplicity. Nothing fancy has been used in the music and nor there is any rapping by Hard Kaur. Lyrics are nice and it exemplifies the importance of friendship which is the theme of the movie. Vishal has done a great job on this song. Guitars by Randolph Correia are the back bone of Jaane Kyon.

2. Desi Girl

Honestly, I didn’t like the song initially, but before writing the review for this song, I listened to it a lot of times and apparently, it has started to grow on me. Add the beautifully cinematographed music video of Desi Girl featuring Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachan, and John Abraham; it is creating a lot of buzz everywhere. Our desi girl, Priyanka, really looks prepossessing in the video.

3. Maa Da Laadla

Undoubtedly, this song has the funniest lyrics in a long time. I just couldn’t stop smiling while listening to the song. Music is catchy, lyrics are funny, voice during the chorus sounds like that of Donald Duck which might be annoying for some but I liked it. Saleem performed really well on the song and without a doubt, perfect choice for the song. Thank God, they didn’t go for Dale Mehandi.

My favorite part of the lyrics “Heer mili na isnu, eh Ranjhe utte mar gaya”

Kudos to Kumaar, who wrote this song. Two thumbs up for this one.

Dostana
4. Shut Up and Bounce

This song is, perhaps, the only disappointment in the whole album. It totally breaks the amiable run of Dostana. The problem with the song is the substandard lyrics which have nothing new to offer. Music is your average Vishal-Shekhar and has nothing new to offer. This song was first used in the trailer of Dostana, and at that time, it was kind of catchy. But, the full version is not at all good

5. Khabar Nahi

Let me tell you one thing, chorus of Khabar Nahi is soulful and lyrics are nice, too. Guitars by Sanjay Divecha are nice surprise to the song and add to it the melodious voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali, the song has all the ingredients to become a hit.

6. Kuch Kum

I’m going to say little about Kuch Kum as there is really “Kuch Kum” in the “dum” of this song. It’s your average romantic number and can be really slow for some people who are used to fast anthems of Pritam.

Overall, Dostana is a nice album with 3 catchy numbers which will be ruling the charts for some time. Based on the GAY relationship of John and Abhishek, this movie is looking like a new age cinema which will appeal to the multiplex audience. I hope, Tarun Mansukhani, the director of Dostana, has done his job well because duo of Vishal and Shekhar has done their job pretty well.

Verdict – Soundtrack of Dostana will appeal to the youth of India and has all the strands to become a big hit on the Indian Charts. Movies of Karan Johar are known for their outstanding music and Dostana is no exception. Did I tell you there is no remix in the album? Yes, there is none and that takes the rating from 3 to 4.

Rating –

Cast – Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham

Music Director – Vishal-Shekhar

Movie Director – Tarun Mansukhani

Fashion
Fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar’s latest venture, is already in news for its controversial subject. According to trade analysts, it is the biggest project of Madhur Bhandarkar. So, the music album has to live up to expectations in order to promote the film.

Based on the glamour world, making music for this movie had been a tough task for Salim-Sulaiman, the composers of the film. But, they handled it quite well. The soundtrack has 5 original songs with 5 remixes.

1. Fashion Ka Jalwa

Soundtrack opens with a blast with Fashion Ka Jalwa, a blend of western music and Indian singing, composed beautifully and penned amiably by Sandeep Nath. Sung my Sukhwinder Singh, he gave a pure Indian touch to this song with Satya Hinduja and Robert “Bob” Omulo helping him on the song. A remix version of the song is also there in the album. A great track with good replay value.

2. Mar Jawaan

This song is one of the best songs to come out this year. The power lies in the singing which is done amazingly by Shruti Pathak. Lyrics are great and music is good, too. A true lounge feel has been given to the song. With Salim Merchant on backup vocals, song reaches to a whole new level. Music is really smooth and you can play it again and again.

3. Kuchh Khaas

This song somewhat appears to be out of the league for this album. It somewhat resembles to those romantic numbers by Vishal and Shekhar. Singing is great but the music is a letdown. There is nothing great about the song which is 5 minutes in length and with no reply value.

4. Aashiyana

Aashiyana is another disappointment after Kuchh Khaas. I can’t imagine this song in the movie at all. Lyrics are not great and nothing special about the song. It is a really bad track. Salim-Sulaiman went completely wrong with this one.

5. Theme Of Fashion

Just when you think they had lost the touch, here come another great song. The sound of santoor grabs your attention and forces you to listen to the song. There are hardly any vocals in the song and it can be played in the background during the movie. A fast paced track which captures your attention during the whole 4 minutes of its runtime.

It’s an above average album with classics like Mar Jawaan and Theme of Fashion. Madhur Bhandarkar finally gets a good soundtrack for his movie and Salim-Sulaiman carried on with their good form. A must listen for everyone.

Best Tracks – Mar Jawaan, Theme of Fashion and Fashion Ka Jalwa

Rating –

Cast – Kangana Ranaut, Priyanka Chopra, Arbaaz Khan, Mugdha Godse

Music Director – Salim-Sulaiman

Movie Director – Madhur Bhandarkar
