If I didn’t have a passion to write reviews on this blog and some extra cash, I would have never got out of my home to watch Pyaar Impossible in this weather. Seriously, what was I thinking? I guess we all make mistakes. Anyway, coming back to the review, Pyaar Impossible stars Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra, who also wrote the script. Directed by Jugal Hansraj, this movie is one big yawn.

Pyaar Impossible Movie Review

Story

The story of movie revolves around the life of Abhay, played by Uday, who is your average geek in college and not so surprisingly, in love with the hottest girl in college, Alisha (Priyanka Chopra). But, he is not able to confess it because Alisha’s dad makes her leave the college and come back to India.

7 years forward, Abhay is still in love with her but he has made a unique operating system which can run all the operating systems in the world. XP, Vista, Linux, Mac etc, you name it, he has it. Good thing for the geeks if it was real. But, his software is stolen by Dino Morea. And thus, begins his journey to get his software back. On his journey, he also meets Alisha again. Will he find his true love? Not hard to predict.

Technical Department

First things first, this movie is filled with clichés. Jugal Hansraj clearly doesn’t have an eye for details. And as a result of this, we are stuck with a depressing love story which could have been much better. And this brings me back to my next point. I don’t know if it’s me only, but, in my opinion, this movie could have been much much better and refreshing if the writer, Uday Chopra, had done some homework. Or probably, he had given this story to some good writer. Writing is totally juvenile with only couple of scenes which bring a smile to your face. Moreover, it’s highly predictable.

One more thing, why does it always happen that if you want to show a popular girl in college then she has to be a rockstar? Why can’t she be a chess player or a debater? Can’t it be beauty with brains? But, I think there is no glamour in being a chess player or a debater.

Music, I’ve to say, is really good. The duo of Salim-Sulaiman has done a wonderful job by giving some peppy tunes, which will be with you even after leaving the cinema. I recommend you to buy the CD now, but we know how you’re going to get the songs. Cinematography was nice

Acting Department

Let’s start the acting department with Priyanka Chopra. She was top notch, to say the least. Very natural and confident. But, I’ve to comment on her dresses. I wonder if her character wears any normal clothes like we do and especially, since she is a divorced mother. Don’t worry about spoiler, it’s hardly any. Mini skirts and showing cleavage in office. I also wonder if there is any dress code in the offices of Singapore, coz if there isn’t, then I’m applying for a job in Singapore straight away. She was looking really really hot. Gorgeous at its best.

And, then we have Uday Chopra. I’ve to be honest here, you don’t have any acting skill. I think you’re lucky that you have your own production company and a brother who is ready to spend money on you while, there are many talented writers and actors never get a break

Anupam Kher and Dino Morea in their supporting roles were ok. Nothing special. And what’s the deal with Alisha’s daughter? She doesn’t look 6 at all and is annoying.

Final Verdict

If there is one reason to watch Pyaar Impossible then it’s Priyanka Chopra. I bet guys are going to love it. Watching her on big screen is a delight and I don’t think she has looked this gorgeous in any other movie. So guys, check it out, but only if some fool are paying for your ticket. As for the girls, they are stuck with Uday Chopra, who shouldn’t come on the big screen, unless it’s Dhoom 3.

Some love stories have the charm to capture your attention within 1 minute and to hook you till the end. But, this movie is nothing like that. And, as far as the hit status for Pyaar Impossibe is concerned, it is anything but possible.

Cast – Priyanka Chopra, Uday Chopra

4. Rocket Singh Salesman of the year movie review – One of the best movies of 2009.
***********************************************************

Rocket Singh is the smartest and best film of 2009 along with Kaminey, without a doubt. Starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead and made by the combo of Shimit Amin and Jaideep Sahni, Rocket Singh deserves all the praises in the world.

Rocket Singh

Rocket Singh is a film about college pass out Harpreet Singh Bedi who was just an average student in college. Not finding any suitable options in further studies, he decides to pursue his career in sales. But, things were not the way he expected. Corruption, bribes, hard competition between the staff, a frustrated guy as his senior, and a corrupt boss, that job turned out to be his worst nightmare. He then decides not to give up on his dream and fight the system and thus begins the journey of Rocket Singh. I won’t give too much story as I want you guys to really enjoy it.

Let’s start reviewing the technical department first. Shimit Amin is a genius, no doubts about that. After Ab Tak Chappan and Chak De India, he is back with a bang! He captures your attention so beautifully that you won’t be able to think about anything else while watching the movie. He sets the tone of the film and shows the corporate world very realistically and that’s why the film works. And, we certainly can’t ignore his partner, Jaideep Sahni for writing such a wonderful script. Filled with many subtle comic moments and such a powerful drama, it is a perfect hybridization of both genres.

There are so many powerful scenes such as Harpreet’s interview, conversation between him, his boss, and the client where his boss insults him and the climax; all 3 probably the best scenes of the year. TWO BIG THUMBS UP!

Background score is really nice by Salim-Sulaiman. Cinematography is also awesome.

Ranbir Kapoor is awesome and as I said before, the only actor of current generation who knows the art of acting. He sinks in the character fully and delivers a powerful performance. It’s definitely on of his best.

But, for the first time, he is not able to steal the show. This time, it is the supporting cast which steals the show. Thanks to Yash Raj, there is no correct information available about the supporting cast on net, so I will update the post with correct names and their characters.

But, there is one character Nitin, Harpreet’s senior, his performance was mind blowing. He takes the whole movie from Ranbir. Other performances were also good and especially Prem Chopra, I liked him after a long time in a movie.

Final Verdict

Rocket Singh is such a powerful film that it is a must watch for everyone, especially for the multiplex audience. If you love no-brainers and can’t digest smart and realistic films then stay away from this one. And don’t go to watch this movie in hopes of a total comedy coz it’s not. There are so many moments which are really cruel. They’ll probably remind you of your own office life. Rocket Singh belongs to two people; Shimit Amin and Jaideep Sahni. They are the heroes of this film. It’s such a pity that the promotions of this movie started so late.

Rocket Singh is the top contender for best film of 2009 award with Kaminey. And with Three Idiots releasing, too, battle for Best Film award is really tough this year. We can’t forget Dev.D, Wake Up Sid, Paa, and Kurbaan which are also strong contenders. I just can’t wait for the nominations this year. Best year of the decade for Bollywood, hands down.

After the success of Wake Up Sid, Dharma Productions are back with a new movie, Kurbaan starring Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi. Kurbaan has an intersting plot and even more interesting poster. You can’t deny it, can you? Well, we are here to talk about the soundtrack of the movie. There are total 6 songs out of which 5 are originals and 1 is remix. Let’s get down to the review.

Kurbaan Music Review

1. Shukran Allah – The very first song of the album is a really nice romantic number featuring Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. Saleem is on the chorus. If you’ve loved songs like Teri Ore, Khduaya Ve etc then you’ll love this. The beat pattern is quite similar to Teri Ore. But, I’m not complaining. Lyrics are typical romantic, nothing new except the title words, of course.

2. Dua – After a very nice romantic number, Salim-Sulaiman gives Dua with an interesting combo of Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher. The music is pretty much average and I don’t like the english verse in the song. Both the singers are good as usual.

3. Ali Maula – Ali Maula, performed by Salim Merchant is a situational song. Well, the song contains lots of urdu words which give the song a unique feel. It’s not meant to be an entertaining song. It’s much more along the lines of “Maula mere lele meri jaan” of Chak De India. It’ll sound pretty good as background score in the movie. Thumbs up!

4. Rasiya – Rasiya is another situational song and has a very mysterious feel to it. Performed beautifully by Shruti Pathak, Rasiya will take you to a whole new world if you listen to it with your eyes closed. If used right, it can be really haunting during the movie.

5. Kurbaan Hua – Here’s the show stopper of the album. Typical a rock number which very suit Vishal Dadlani’s voice, this song is going to be a chart topper. Their last effort, Nazara Hai of 8 x 10 Tasveer went unnoticed though it was a very good song but this will definitely be on everyone’s lips. The chorus is mindblowing, simply amazing. Kudos to Vishal for singing it so beautifully. Two thumbs up!

After last year’s hit, Fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar is back with his latest feature film, Jail, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mughda Ghodse. The film will release on Novermber 6th, 2009. Let’s get straight to the music review. The album comprises of 8 tracks, out of which 4 are original and 4 are remixes. We’ll talk only about originals.

Jail Music Review

1. Sainya Ve

The song starts with a strong guitar intro with Toshi on the vocals. Music is by the duo Sharib and Toshi and they have also written the lyrics. The song has nothing special about it and moreover, you’ll get the vibe of “Maahi Ve” of Raaz 2 during the song. Beat is ordinary and so are the lyrics. Nothing innovative.

2. Milke Yun Laga

Milke Yun Laga has been also composed by Sharib and Toshi but this time, it’s Sharib on the vocals. This song is better than Sainya Ve; both in terms of music and lyrics. Just like Sainya Ve, guitar is the important component of the song. But, the beat is worth listening this time. But, it’s not upto the standards of today’s songs like Dhan Te Nan or any Pritam number.

3. Bareily Ke Bazaar Mein

After two tracks by Sharib and Toshi, Bareily Ke Bazaar mein has been composed by Shamir Tandon. As you can get an idea from the title, this is a song which might have worked like 10 years or something but this is an utter disappointment. I don’t even think this song will look good as a situational song. The only saving grace can be the male’s voice in the song as it gives a raw touch but everthing else is unpalatable.

4. Daata Sun Le

Wow, hearing a song from Lata Mangeshkar is such a nice surprise! Daata Sun Le works only for one reason, Lata Mangeshkar. This song has a lot of potential but the mediocrity of the composer, Shamir Tandon, can’t take the advantage of Lata’s voice. You give the same song to A.R. Rahman, Salim-Sulaiman, Amit Trivedi or SEL, you have a masterpiece in your hand. Lyrics are touching but as I said earlier, music is really average.

A song creates magic when Lyrics, Music and Singer’s voice compliment each other which is clearly not happening in this case. A lost opportunity!

Final Verdict

On the whole, the soundtrack of Jail is a disappointment. Madhur should have sticked to Salim-Sulaiman. But, if we go by the subject of the film, I don’t think movie needs a song anyway. If they are using these songs as background music then they are in trouble. Only Daata Sun Le has some chance to catch your attention otherwise every song is unpalatable. Better luck next time.

8 x 10 Tasveer

The very fact that Nagesh Kukunoor is directing a thriller is more than enough to go to watch 8 x 10 Tasveer. The director of critically acclaimed Hyderabad Blues and Iqbaal is back with a bang after his previous disappointing film, Bombay to Bangkok.

8 x 10 Tasveer is about Jai (Akshay Kumar), who has a natural ability to travel into past with the help of pictures. He uses this power to unfold the mystery of his father’s death. And this leads to very interesting moments and some great cinema.

Hero of the film, Nagesh

The concept is very interesting and Nagesh pulled it off very well. He had the vision to direct this movie unlike many directors who lack the vision to pull off an interesting concept. It is because of his sincere efforts that movie is worth watching. He has done his homework and he has made sure that you won’t leave the hall before the end. Two thumbs up for his direction.

But, Nagesh somewhat disappoints in the script department. 8 x 10 Tasveer takes its own time to grasp you completely and initial 20 minutes of the first half are responsible for it. Honestly, the first half is weak and juvenile dialogues don’t help either. But, the second half is the USP of the movie.

The climax of the movie can be disappointing for some of you but the majority in the hall liked it. There were claps during the last 20 minutes and to honest, I have mixed feelings about the climax.

I’ve one complaint against him and that is shameless brand advertising of “Godrej” in the movie. I mean, come on, this looks really cheap and kills the whole fun. You can earn money from the tickets, don’t do it in your next movie.

Technical Department

8 x 10 Tasveer is technically perfect. Mostly shot in Canada, movie looks great with some awesome visuals. Cinematography of Vikas Sivaraman is top notch and he has left no stones unturned. And this brings us to music department.

There are only 3 songs, “Nazaara Hai” in the opening credits, “Kuchh Is Tarah” used as background song and “I Got The Picture” in the credits. Nazaara Hai is my favorite of all the three, primarily because of Vishal’s superb singing.

The background score by Salim-Sulaiman is prodigious. It is perfect of the movie and plays a vital role in setting up the mood of the film. Good job, Salim-Sulaiman.

The Actors

To be very frank, I’m disappointed from Akshay Kumar. The intensity, the charisma, and the sincerity which we see in his other films were clearly missing in 8 x 10 Tasveer. This movie was a perfect opportunity to prove himself as a great actor but he clearly missed it. He is carrying almost a single expression throughout the movie. The scenes which involve waking up from sleep or shocks of nightmares were poorly executed by him. I expected a lot from you, Akshay.

Other actors such as Ayesha Takia, Sharmila Tagore, Benjamin Gilani, Ananth Mahadevan and Rushaad Rana were alright in their small roles. Javed Jaffrey who plays the detective in the movie deserves a special mention. He provides a comedy element in the movie and he does it gracefully.

And what’s with the Canadian actors? None of them knew ABC of acting. Please go for professional actors so that these amateurs don’t kill the fun. And honestly, the actors involved in the initial 20 minutes were partly responsible for the weak first half.

Verdict

8 x 10 Tasveer is a great thriller and a technically perfect film. The hero of the movie, indubitably, is Nagesh Kukunoor. 8 x 10 Tasveer works because of his direction and vision. Akshay Kumar has wasted a wonderful opportunity to prove himself. Considering, there are no releases in the next two three weeks due to Producers – Multiplex war, 8 x 10 has an amiable chance to score at the box office. It is one of the best movies to come out in 2009. A big thumbs up, go watch it!

2008’s most awaited release and first movie of Shahrukh Khan after a gap of 13 months, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is finally out. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is special for many reasons; first being that it is the first movie of Aditya Chopra after a gap of 8 years, it marks the debut of Anushka Sharma, and at the modern time of recession and terrorism, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is expected to bring smiles at the face of both the audience and the film distributors.

So, does Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi lives up to all these expectations? Well, it surely does. It delivers what has been promised by Shahrukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, a simple yet extraordinary love story.

Set in the beautiful Amritsar, the story is about an average guy named Surinder Sahni (Shahrukh Khan) who marries the daughter of his teacher, Taani (Anushka Sharma), due to some circumstances and how he tries to make her fall in love with him. Story is simple but effective, mainly because of the treatment given by Aditya Chopra.

One of the strongest points of the movie is the authentic look of Amritsar, brilliantly captured by Ravi K. Chandran. The other strong points of the movie are the script and direction, done brilliantly by Aditya Chopra. But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi works because it’s simple. Yes, from lyrics of the songs to the dialogues, from sets to the storyline, everything is so simple that you just fall in love with the movie.

One more point that is worth mentioning is that many beautiful moments in the movie are without dialogues, for example; the scene in which Surinder keeps a rose with the note for Tani and then decides to put the rose away or the one in which Tani packs lunch for him for the first time and Surinder keeps on looking at the lunch box even while driving. There are many small but lovable scenes which I won’t mention so that you can enjoy the movie.

Music

Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte is, undoubtedly, the best picturized song of 2008. If you thought Farah Khan captured the 70s look perfectly then think again. Aditya Chopra takes it to the whole new level and add to that 5 actresses of Bollywood in the song, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte is a breathtaking experience.

Also the choreography of Dance Pe Chance and Haule Haule is top class. Watch out for the scene in which kids make the painting of Anushka in the song Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, you’ll love it. It’s a very creative move by Aditya. Songs and background score is top class, as I mentioned in the music review of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Performance of Anushka Sharma

Now let’s move to acting department and first we’ll talk about Anushka Sharma. One thing that I noticed is that people are comparing Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, even the press is doing that. So who is the better actress? Anushka Sharma hands down.

She is totally lovable as the fun loving Punjabi girl and she looks beautiful, too. There is modulation in her voice which is clearly missing in Deepika and her acting is marvelous. Dialogue delivery is superb and she shows all the emotions while speaking.

All the people in theater clapped and whistled when she drove the bike, do I need to say anything more? Best debut actress of 2008 awards belongs to her.

Vinay Phatak as the friend of Shahrukh is nice and he can be a really strong contender for best supporting actor. He plays an important role in the development of Shahrukh’s character.

Performance of Shahrukh Khan

Now this brings us to Shahrukh. This role, without a doubt, is one of the best performances in his career. Playing the character of both Surinder and Raj was not an easy task considering they both are same person. Let me give you an example of that. How will you explain the dilemma of Surinder when Taani agrees to leave her marriage and decides to run away with Raj? This can be really difficult to portray but Shahrukh has done it perfectly. He is charming as Raj but his role as Surinder steals the whole show.

His quiet nature and low key voice does full justice to Surinder’s character. Emotions are clearly visible on his face, both as Surinder and Raj and he looks like 20 year old hunk as Raj and at the same time he looks like a 40 year old man as Surinder. A big applause for Shahrukh, even his haters will love him, no doubt about that. What about the reaction of audience? Whistles and claps.

Things that were not good

But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi lacks an emotional punch which was clearly visible in DDLJ. No doubt that the story will touch your heart but there is something missing. And there are some clichés, for example; the scene in which Tani realizes that she is in love with Surinder and not Raj.

There are many other clichés which could have been easily avoided especially in the dance show. One more thing which can go against is the length of the movie. It’s not that you’ll be bored or something but some people are impatient these days. But, the movie will grab your attention during the whole time so chances are less.

Verdict

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is clearly a winner for Yash Raj Films and it can break many records because of its theme. Film works because of its simplicity and the feel good factor it carries along with it. In the modern era in which relationships are ending just like that, it clearly brings a hope that true love is still out there. Moreover, it’ll also help you to overcome the sadness which is around us due to terrorism and recession.

Anushka Sharma makes a solid debut and she is clearly the next big thing. She is not your average good looking girl who doesn’t know how to act. She has an immense amount of talent and should use it carefully.

But the real star of the movie is Shahrukh Khan. This movie clearly shows how much talented actor he is. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will take his super star status to a whole new level, especially among the foreign audience, considering it is being released in 30 countries. Fight for the best actor award is between Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh now but we’ve to wait for Ghajini. A sure shot blockbuster as its budget is low. Highly Recommended!

Cast – Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Vinay Pathak

Music Director – Salim – Sulaiman

Movie Director – Aditya Chopra

Fashion

First thing first, Fashion is all about women. An industry where most of the movies are male oriented, finding a movie where ladies give extra-ordinary performances and not being just eye-candies is a rare occasion. Under the creative hands of National Award winning director, Madhur Bhandarkar, who is the master-mind behind movies like Page 3 and Corporate, Fashion comes out and hits you hard with the amount of realism it has.

From casting couch to models taking drugs, from wardrobe malfunction to tremulous relationships, Fashion has everything except the gay kiss scene which Madhur cut out.

Fashion is about a girl from Chandigarh, Meghna Mathur played by Priyanka Chopra, who aspires to be a super-model and comes to Mumbai against her father’s wish. In a city where thousands of people come every day to achieve fame, finding your spot is not an easy task and that too in the Fashion industry. With her competitive attitude and killer looks, Meghna reaches the top with the help of her friends, throwing aside Shonali Gujral (Kangna Ranaut), who is the current show stopper in the fashion industry.

So, does Madhur deliever an outstanding film this time? Let’s find out.

Good Points about Fashion

1. Acting by the ladies – The strongest point of the movie is, undoubtedly, performances by the leading ladies especially that of Priyanka Chopra. This is a role for which any Bollywood actress can die, well not literally. Priyanka finally hits the right chord this time after giving a series of flops. Get ready for award functions darling, 2008 belongs to you. I hope Katrina Kaif will watch this and learn some acting.

The newcomer in the movie, Mugdha Godse, who is playing a role of an unsuccessful model, is a nice surprise. She is confident and can give a run for money to any actress out there.

Kangna performs well as a drug addict and a successful model. But, the modulation in her voice is surely missing which kind of ruins her performance. But, she is the one who walks with full confidence and attitude on the ramp. I totally loved it. Moreover, the wardrobe malfunction scene was brilliantly performed by her.

2. Direction and Cinematography – Indubitably, direction of Fashion by Madhur is top class and keeps you glued to your seat for the whole time. Scenes are beautifully shot and every frame of the movie looks extravagant, thanks to Mahesh Limaye, who is the man behind cinematography.

3. Background Score – Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is haunting which sets the tone for the film and plays an important role in the movie. Songs are nice, especially Mar Jawaan.

4. Realism – Fashion is all about realism and Madhur doesn’t shy away from anything. The best thing I liked about the movie is the portrayal of gay designers. Conundrum of male models to sleep with gay designers in order to get a show and condition of a mother whose son is a gay fashion designer and doesn’t want to marry are brilliantly shown. Drugs and booze are added bonus to the movie.

Bad points about Fashion

1. Slow pace of the movie – When a movie is about 2 hrs and 40 minutes+ long then at least you expect a fast paced movie from the director just like in the case of The Dark Knight but you’ll be disappointed here. About 30+ minutes can be easily cut from Fashion which has no significance in the development of the story and the characters. It’ll surely test your patience.

2. Dubbing – Alright, you’ll not hear complaints about this in other reviews as they don’t discuss technical stuff that much. But, I want to point out the serious problem with dubbing here. Pathetic can be the right word for dubbing of Fashion.

Dialogues are not in sync, and no attention has been paid to the small talk between people. I know most of you don’t care about such minute details but me, as a movie junkie, I do pay attention to such stuff. Why doesn’t Bollywood adopt the sync sound method to record everything on the shooting itself, just like Hollywood?

3. Too many gays – I know many male fashion designers are gays, but seriously, in Fashion, every male designer is being depicted as gay.

4. Arbaaz Khan – Arbaaz Khan is playing the role of Abhijit Sarin, a fashion business tycoon. The role is long and can’t be described as a guest appearance and has a lot of significance in the road to success of Priyanka’s character. And clearly, Arbaaz was not the right choice for this role. He doesn’t show the attitude which was required for this role.

Verdict – Fashion is truly an outstanding experience thanks to brilliant performances and stirring direction by Madhur Bhandarkar. But the slow pace and the length definitely kills some fun from the movie.
