Dostana Movie Review – 4 stars Click here to read

Dostana
Dostana, Karan Johar’s new adventure as a producer, is about to hit theaters pretty soon and the start looks promising with a nice movie soundtrack. Vishal-Shekhar, the men behind the soundtrack finally hit the right chord this time. Dostana has a fresh feel which certainly appeal to the youngistan. The current play count at Last.fm is an attestation to the success of the soundtrack.

1. Jaane Kyon

Jaane Kyon is the catchiest song of 2008 hands down. The power of this song lies in its simplicity. Nothing fancy has been used in the music and nor there is any rapping by Hard Kaur. Lyrics are nice and it exemplifies the importance of friendship which is the theme of the movie. Vishal has done a great job on this song. Guitars by Randolph Correia are the back bone of Jaane Kyon.

2. Desi Girl

Honestly, I didn’t like the song initially, but before writing the review for this song, I listened to it a lot of times and apparently, it has started to grow on me. Add the beautifully cinematographed music video of Desi Girl featuring Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachan, and John Abraham; it is creating a lot of buzz everywhere. Our desi girl, Priyanka, really looks prepossessing in the video.

3. Maa Da Laadla

Undoubtedly, this song has the funniest lyrics in a long time. I just couldn’t stop smiling while listening to the song. Music is catchy, lyrics are funny, voice during the chorus sounds like that of Donald Duck which might be annoying for some but I liked it. Saleem performed really well on the song and without a doubt, perfect choice for the song. Thank God, they didn’t go for Dale Mehandi.

My favorite part of the lyrics “Heer mili na isnu, eh Ranjhe utte mar gaya”

Kudos to Kumaar, who wrote this song. Two thumbs up for this one.

Dostana
4. Shut Up and Bounce

This song is, perhaps, the only disappointment in the whole album. It totally breaks the amiable run of Dostana. The problem with the song is the substandard lyrics which have nothing new to offer. Music is your average Vishal-Shekhar and has nothing new to offer. This song was first used in the trailer of Dostana, and at that time, it was kind of catchy. But, the full version is not at all good

5. Khabar Nahi

Let me tell you one thing, chorus of Khabar Nahi is soulful and lyrics are nice, too. Guitars by Sanjay Divecha are nice surprise to the song and add to it the melodious voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali, the song has all the ingredients to become a hit.

6. Kuch Kum

I’m going to say little about Kuch Kum as there is really “Kuch Kum” in the “dum” of this song. It’s your average romantic number and can be really slow for some people who are used to fast anthems of Pritam.

Overall, Dostana is a nice album with 3 catchy numbers which will be ruling the charts for some time. Based on the GAY relationship of John and Abhishek, this movie is looking like a new age cinema which will appeal to the multiplex audience. I hope, Tarun Mansukhani, the director of Dostana, has done his job well because duo of Vishal and Shekhar has done their job pretty well.

Verdict – Soundtrack of Dostana will appeal to the youth of India and has all the strands to become a big hit on the Indian Charts. Movies of Karan Johar are known for their outstanding music and Dostana is no exception. Did I tell you there is no remix in the album? Yes, there is none and that takes the rating from 3 to 4.

Rating –

Cast – Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham

Music Director – Vishal-Shekhar

Movie Director – Tarun Mansukhani

Golmaal Returns
Race, Jannat, Kismat Konnection, and Singh is Kinng, all of them are the music chartbusters of this year and what’s the common link between them? All of them are composed by Pritam. So what if many of the songs are copied from South Korean artists? Copying is an art, too! Well, for his die-hard fans, he is back again with his new soundtrack for the movie, Golmaal Returns, which is highly anticipated due to the success of Golmaal.

So, does Pritam spin his magic again? Highly unlikely! It looks like Pritam lost his touch on this one and inclusion of previous songs from Golmaal can pretty much confirm that. Yes, there are songs from Golmaal which were composed by Vishal-Shekhar and those are the only saving points of this soundtrack.

Golmaal Returns consist of 15 songs out of which 6 are from Golmaal, 5 are remixes and 4 are originals and there is one English version of one Hindi song. I know that doesn’t sound palatable but we can’t do anything about that. One note to the readers, you’re not going to get any romantic number in this album. Every song is meant to be an upbeat song and it’s not a surprise considering the theme of the movie.

1. Tha Kar Ke

The soundtrack starts with a bang with Tha Kar Ke and I won’t be surprised if you don’t know what it means. Also, this song is composed by a new music director, Ashish Pandit. Ironically, this is the only good song out of all the originals. It may take some time to like this song but once you start liking it, there is no going back. Neeraj Shridhar does his job perfectly and so do the others including Anvesha, Aakariti, Earl and Indie. It’s a pretty solid track with good amount of playback value.

2. Vacancy

I really don’t know what to say about Vacancy. It’s one of those which you either hate or love but can’t ignore. There is a feel of old Golmaal song but with a fast beat. Just like Tha Kar Ke, it is an upbeat song with Neeraj in the lead. Lyrics are nothing special and music is average, too. It’s for hardcore Preetam’s fans. 5 minute length hampers its playback value big time.

When will music composers realize that there is no use of making such a lengthy song? They should learn something from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na soundtrack. One reason for its success was the short length of the songs.

Golmaal Returns

3. Tu Saala

Tu Saala doesn’t make any sense and one wonders why it was included in the album? It is definitely one of the worst songs to come out this year. Thank god, you don’t have to listen it for long time as it is only 3 minutes and 29 seconds long. Phew!

4. Meow

What’s the deal with the song title these days? Last year, it was Dard-E-Disco, and this year, it is Tandoori Nights from the movie Karzzz. Now there is one more addition to this list and that is Meow. I wonder if they were inspired from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, if you know what I mean.

At least, this one is better than Tu Saala with better music and singing but not what you call a chartbuster. It’s an average song with a little playback value. To add to your woes, there is one English version of this song. What was the use of it, anyway? Was Pritam out of ideas for this one?

In a nutshell, music of Golmaal Returns disappoints. Thank god, they included songs from Golmaal. They make the album worth listening. It’s not a good start for Golmaal Returns.

Best Songs – Tha Kar Ke, Golmaal (Original from Golmaal)

Rating –

Cast – Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Arshad Varsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Anjana Sukhani, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley

Music Director – Pritam, Ashish Pandit

Movie Director – Rohit Shetty

With a series of flops going on for Yash Raj Productions both in terms of movies and music, they surely have great hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s, Bachna Ae Haseeno. Promos look promising and Deepika is looking hot as ever. So, will this movie change the fate of Yash Raj Production in terms of music? Let’s find out.

Bachna Ae Haseeno

1. Khuda Jaane

This is the first song of the movie and it is a song which takes some time to get over you, considering its slow pace and the female singer that doesn’t suit the song at all. Lyrics are less or more average only. But, if you watch its music video, then surely you’ll like it. But as I said earlier, the Shilpa Rao doesn’t suit the song. You’ll feel even weirder when you watch the video because her voice doesn’t suit Deepika at all.

But overall, it’s a nice song but a bit lengthy too.

2. Lucky Boy

It starts with a nice Punjabi verse, and then Sunidhi comes and ruins the song. It’s not her fault too because the song itself is below average i.e. lyrics and the music. I can bet that, this song will be picturized on Bipasha Basu. It’ll certainly not appeal to guys, but, it can be popular in girls. And, I don’t know why they included Hard Kaur in this. Just like Khuda Jaane, it takes some time to get on you.

3. Aahista Aahista

Nice use of guitar in the starting of the song and that guitar solo lasts for almost a minute! Lucky Ali and Shreya Ghoshal make a nice duet and Shreya is good as always. It’s been a while since I listened to Lucky and his voice sounds refreshing. As of music, it is above average. But 5:52 minute length of the song kills it on the first place. If they would have made it shorter, then it would have been a moderate hit.

4. Jogi Mahi

When you listen to it for the first time, you get a lot of expectations from this song because of Shekhar’s great voice, but by the time you reach the hook part, lyrics just drop to level 0 and it doesn’t go in sync with music. Song is good only in the verses but it is really bad at the hook or chorus. Both Sukhvinder Singh and Shekhar give a first-class performance on it. Himani Kapoor is also palatable.

If you just don’t give care about lyrics for this song, then it would be sound really nice to you. One of the best songs of the whole album.

5. Small Town Girl

I really can’t understand that why they put this song in the album? It’s one of the worst songs to come out this year and it doesn’t make any sense. Songs starts with great guitar riffs. But then, it turns into crap with even more crappy lyrics.

“Chhoti ungli pe nachayegi tumhe, she’s a small town girl”

What the hell man? What kind of lyrics are these? Somewhere it’ll also sound like, “Ticket to Hollywood”, as Shankar Mahadevan is on the song and music is somewhat also the same. I don’t know why he did this song. Worst track of the album.

6. Khuda Jaane Revisited

The one and only remix of the album and I’ll not talk about it.

7. Bachna Ae Haseeno

Aaaww! The classic song. I was really looking forward to it, but again, Vishal-Shekhar didn’t do full justice to it. Why do you need Sumit Kumar on the verse man? He sounds so substandard on this song. Rapping is great by Vishal. But the chorus by Kishore Kumar is still a classic and it is the best part of the song. Listen to it for Kishore Kumar only.

I don’t know what has happened to Vishal-Shekhar, who gave such a hit album, Om Shanti Om. Maybe, they should take a break for some time and reinvent themselves. As for the album, it is an average album without a blockbuster song. Music should have been extraordinary for this movie, since there is so much hype around it.

2.5/5 (Better luck next time unlucky boys)
