Chandigarh, July 15
Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest and most iconic marathon runner, passed away at the age of 114 on Monday after being struck by an unidentified vehicle while taking his routine walk along the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway near his native village, Bias. The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 pm, according to sources close to the family.

Author and biographer Khushwant Singh, who confirmed the news after speaking to family members, shared the heartbreaking update on social media. “My Turbaned Tornado is no more… He was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja,” Singh wrote on X.

Political and Public Tributes Pour In

Condolences poured in from political leaders, public figures, and admirers worldwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, calling Singh “extraordinary” for his unique persona and the way he inspired India’s youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle. “He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away,” the Prime Minister said.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria remembered Singh as a symbol of hope and resilience. “At 114, he joined me in the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march with unmatched spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire a drug-free and determined Punjab,” he stated.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also expressed sorrow, stating: “His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations. May his soul rest in peace.”

A Late Bloomer Who Ran into History

Born on April 1, 1911, in Jalandhar district, Fauja Singh led a quiet life until tragedy changed his course. Following the deaths of his wife and son, Singh turned to running as a means of healing. At the age of 89, he ran his first marathon—the 2000 London Marathon—defying age and athletic convention.

Over the next decade, Singh ran in nine full marathons, including in London, Toronto, and New York, and continued to set records well into his 90s and beyond.

At the age of 93, he completed a full marathon in 6 hours and 54 minutes, setting a world record in his age category. At 100, he created history by setting eight world age-group records in a single day at a special event in Canada.

Global Recognition and Enduring Impact

Fauja Singh carried the Olympic torch for both the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, further cementing his position as an international fitness icon. His life story was widely celebrated, and he featured in a significant global advertisement for Adidas alongside sports legends Muhammad Ali and David Beckham.

He migrated to the UK in the 1990s and lived in East London, where he became a revered figure within the South Asian community. Despite global fame, Singh remained humble, vegetarian, deeply spiritual, and committed to a disciplined lifestyle.

His official biography, “Turbaned Tornado”, authored by Khushwant Singh, was formally launched at the House of Lords in the UK on July 7, 2011—a rare honour for an Indian sportsperson.

Final Years and Lasting Legacy

Until his final days, Fauja Singh remained active, promoting fitness, drug-free living, and positivity among young people. His involvement in health campaigns and charity runs made him a figure of inspiration far beyond the world of athletics. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy—of grit, grace, and greatness—will continue to inspire millions worldwide.
