Chandigarh,July29,UPDATED:11.35AM

Haryana Police have provided security to the family of the prime witness in the case related to the alleged castration of followers by Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, following complaints of threats from dera supporters.

The witness, himself a victim, had earlier approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which ordered the registration of an FIR against Ram Rahim and two doctors accused of carrying out the castrations. Though the witness has since moved to the US, he recorded his testimony before the CBI Special Magistrate, Haryana, via video conferencing. His cross-examination is still pending.

The witness’s family, residing in Tohana (Fatehabad), had repeatedly sought protection, citing death threats from dera followers. In letters dated March 25 and April 8, submitted through advocate Navkiran Singh, the witness requested security for his wife and three children, alleging that Ram Rahim’s followers could target them “anytime”.

On July 11, the witness informed the court that the security cover for his family had been suddenly withdrawn on May 24. He alleged that soon after, dera supporters issued fresh threats, prompting his wife to write to the Fatehabad SP, CBI, and the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on May 26.

Following these representations, the CBI headquarters in New Delhi wrote to the Haryana ADGP (Security) on June 6, seeking round-the-clock armed security for the family. On June 11, acting on directions of the CBI Special Magistrate, its Chandigarh branch also wrote to the Haryana ADGP (CID). Another letter followed on July 14.

A joint security assessment committee — comprising Fatehabad SP Siddhant Jain, CID DSP (Hisar) Ajay Kumar, Inspector Kuldeep Singh (CID Fatehabad), and SI Satyavan (Security Section Fatehabad) — concluded that the witness’s wife indeed faced a “threat to her life” and warned that “an unpleasant incident could take place”. The committee recommended immediate security deployment.

Following this, the Fatehabad SP informed the DIG, CBI Chandigarh, on July 24 that security had been restored. These developments were placed on record before the CBI Special Magistrate on Tuesday.
