New Delhi/Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have detained four persons in South Kashmir for questioning in connection with the mighty Red Fort blast that killed 12 people and injured 20 others in Delhi on Monday evening. NIA to probe the terror module link.
Police sources reveal that those detained include brothers of Dr Umar Nabi, a doctor from Pulwama who has been absconding since the police unearthed a white-collar inter-state terror module in Faridabad earlier this week. Nabi, who was employed at Al-Falah University, is suspected of having been driving the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near Gate No. 1 of Red Fort Metro Station around 6:52 pm. “Investigation is underway to establish Umar’s role,” a senior official said, confirming that his whereabouts remain unknown.
Terror Module Link, NIA to Probe
On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had announced the busting of a major terror module involving highly educated operatives, including three doctors. They seized over 2,900 kg of explosive-making material.
Among those arrested was Dr Muzamil Ahmad Ganai, alias Musaib, a resident of Koil in Pulwama, who had been teaching at Al-Falah University for three and a half years. Another accused, Dr Shahin Shahid, a woman doctor from Uttar Pradesh employed at the university’s hospital, was also arrested.
Police believe that Umar Nabi, who went underground following Ganai’s arrest, may have carried out the Delhi blast, fearing his imminent capture.
Investigations Point to Ammonium Nitrate Use
Forensic experts and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell have confirmed that the Red Fort explosion was caused by a mixture of ammonium nitrate, fuel oil, and detonators—similar to materials seized from the Faridabad module.
Investigators suspect the involvement of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operatives, given the group’s past attempts to target high-profile sites in the national capital. Preliminary CCTV footage shows a masked man parking the car near the Metro station nearly three hours before it exploded, gutting several nearby vehicles.
Raids and Detentions in Kashmir
In follow-up action, the J&K Police conducted search operations in Pulwama and adjoining areas, detaining at least four individuals linked to Umar Nabi. Among them is Amir Rashid, a resident of Pulwama, whose Aadhaar card was allegedly used to purchase the i20 car involved in the explosion. “Questioning of the detained persons is underway,” said an officer. Police are also tracing the ownership chain of the vehicle and examining digital payment records used in its purchase.
National Security on High Alert
The Union Home Ministry has taken serious note of the incident. Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting late Monday night, attended by top officials from the NIA, Intelligence Bureau, and Delhi Police. Delhi has been placed under a nationwide security alert, with enhanced checks at airports, railway stations, and border points. Hotels and guesthouses in Daryaganj, Paharganj, and Chandni Chowk were searched overnight for any possible suspects.
Security Measures and Public Advisory
The Red Fort Metro Station remains closed as forensic teams and the NIA conduct a thorough sweep of the blast site.
Traffic diversions have been implemented around Netaji Subhash Marg and adjoining routes. Commuters have been advised to use alternate roads and avoid the Red Fort area until further notice. A senior Delhi Police officer said, “The pattern of explosives, the profile of suspects, and the timing all point toward a coordinated terror operation. We are working around the clock to uncover the full network behind the attack.”
