Chandigarh: The Haryana Government on Tuesday appointed senior IPS officer Ajay Singhal as the new Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, following the receipt of a panel cleared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

According to the official order issued by the Home Department (Home-I Branch), the UPSC, vide its letter dated December 31, 2025, empanelled three IPS officers for the post of DGP after considering the proposal submitted by the state government. The panel comprised Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor (IPS, 1990 batch), Ajay Singhal (IPS, 1992 batch) and Alok Mittal (IPS, 1993 batch).

After examining the panel, the Governor of Haryana approved the appointment of Ajay Singhal as Director General of Police (Head of Police Force), Haryana, for a minimum tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions in Prakash Singh and Others vs Union of India.

The appointment brings to a close weeks of speculation over the state’s top police post. It marks the beginning of a new leadership phase for the Haryana Police at a time when the force is grappling with challenges ranging from organised crime and narcotics to cyber fraud and public order management.

Ajay Singhal Belongs to Rewari

A 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Haryana cadre, Ajay Singhal, is widely regarded as a seasoned field and administrative officer with extensive experience across the policing, intelligence, and internal security domains. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has held several sensitive, high-impact assignments at both the district and state levels.

Singhal has served as Superintendent of Police in key districts, where he earned a reputation for firm law enforcement combined with procedural discipline. He has also held senior-range and headquarters-level postings, contributing to policy formulation, crime control strategies, and inter-agency coordination.

Known within the force as a low-profile but methodical officer, Singhal has been associated with strengthening crime investigation processes, improving coordination between district police and specialised wings, and focusing on personnel capacity-building. His experience is seen as particularly relevant at a time when Haryana is witnessing evolving crime patterns, including organised gangs, cyber-enabled offences and inter-state criminal networks.

As DGP, Singhal is expected to prioritise intelligence-led policing, tighter supervision of district units, and improved public outreach, while ensuring adherence to police reforms mandated by the courts. Internal sources indicate that modernising policing, using technology, and restoring public confidence will be among his key focus areas.
