New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday formally announced the long-awaited schedule for the election of its national president, with the party’s organisational election in charge of issuing the notification. As earlier reported, nominations for the top post will be filed on January 19, while the election will be held on January 20.
BJP working president Nitin Nabin will file his nomination on January 19. Senior party leaders are expected to propose his name. His nomination will be the sole entry, signalling complete consensus within the party leadership.
Sources said the choice of Nabin was finalised after consultations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, ending months of deliberations over the next party president.
The formal election will take place on January 20, paving the way for Nabin to replace JPNadda, who assumed charge in January 2020 and has been granted extensions.
At 45, Nitin Nabin will become the youngest-ever BJP national president and the first party chief born after the BJP’s formation in 1980. Party sources indicated that after Nabin formally takes charge, a revamp of the BJP’s organisational structure is likely, followed by a possible Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre.
