CM Says Attack Linked to Pakistan, Two Accused Arrested, One Shot Dead
Jalandhar: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday said the killing of a Home Guard jawan and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in a border village of Gurdaspur was “Pakistan-sponsored,” warning that hostile elements across the border continue to target Punjab to destabilise India.
Addressing newly inducted police personnel during their passing-out parade at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) ground in Jalandhar, Mann said the police had launched swift action against the accused.
“The police attempted to arrest all three suspects. One of them opened fire and was neutralised, while the remaining two have been arrested. They have links with Pakistan,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that Pakistan continues to use Punjab’s border areas to disturb peace through illegal activities, including drug trafficking and drone-based operations.
Punjab Police Safeguards Nation, CM Stresses Need for Modern Equipment
Highlighting Punjab’s strategic importance, Mann said the Punjab Police plays a critical role not just in protecting the state but also the entire country.
“The Punjab Police serves the entire nation by protecting the porous border, which is like India’s gateway. Along with the Border Security Force, we are continuously preventing illegal activities, drug smuggling, and cross-border infiltration,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasised the need to modernise police forces with advanced technical equipment and vehicles to counter emerging threats from across the border.
CM Reaffirms Crackdown on Drugs, Announces Recruitment and Modernisation Drive
Mann also reiterated his government’s commitment to eliminating drug abuse in the state, referring to the intensified anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh.’
“They left behind a blemish called ‘chitta’ (drugs), but we will eliminate it with full responsibility. The second phase of the campaign now involves public participation and intelligence inputs from citizens,” he said.
He also praised the performance of the Sadak Suraksha Force, noting that road accident fatalities in Punjab had dropped by 48 per cent due to faster emergency response.
Punjab Director General of Police informed that the government has issued appointment letters to over 12,000 police personnel in the past four years. Another 1,900 recruits are set to begin training next month, while recruitment for 3,400 additional posts is underway.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by his wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur, encouraged the recruits to serve with dedication, noting that Punjab Police personnel often work tirelessly for extended hours to ensure public safety and national security.
