Amritsar/Chandigarh: Former Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar was on Wednesday sent to judicial custody after being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate upon the expiry of his extended police remand in an abetment to suicide case.
Bhullar was arrested on March 23 in Mandi Gobindgarh in connection with the death of Gagandeep Randhawa, a district manager with the Punjab Warehousing Corporation.
Randhawa allegedly died by suicide on March 21 after consuming Celphos. Before taking the extreme step, he recorded a video message in which he reportedly named Bhullar, triggering a major political controversy in the state.
Following his arrest, Bhullar was initially remanded to five days of police custody, which was later extended by another three days on March 29.
Court Proceedings
During the latest hearing, police sought a further five-day extension of remand, citing the need to recover Bhullar’s mobile phone and other electronic evidence linked to the case. However, the court granted only a three-day extension, after which Bhullar was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday. Police had also restricted media entry into the court complex during his production.
Political Fallout
The case has sparked a political storm in Punjab, with Opposition parties targeting the government over the circumstances leading to Randhawa’s death and demanding strict action against those involved. Further investigation is underway as authorities continue to gather evidence and examine the allegations in the case.
