Chandigarh/Dehradun: Amid growing scrutiny over objectionable content in music performances, Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma has landed in yet another controversy, this time for allegedly using abusive language during a live performance at a college event in Uttarakhand.
The development comes shortly after rapper Badshah faced criticism over the vulgar lyrics of his song Tateeree, indicating a wider debate around content and responsibility in the music industry.
Summons Issued by Women’s Commission
Taking serious note of the incident, the Haryana State Commission for Women has summoned Sharma to appear in person before its Chairperson Renu Bhatia in Panchkula on April 18 at 11 am. He has also been directed to submit a detailed explanation clarifying his conduct.
In its notice, the Commission stated that it had received information that during a recent programme at DAV College, Dehradun, the singer allegedly used abusive and inappropriate language, which, if proven, raises serious concerns regarding public decency and respect towards women.
The Commission invoked its powers under the Haryana State Commission for Women Act, 2012, particularly Sections 10(1)(f) and 10(1)(h), which empower it to summon individuals and investigate matters affecting women’s dignity.
The notice also cautioned that failure to comply with the summons could invite appropriate legal action.
Incident at College Event Raises Eyebrows
According to available information, Sharma had performed at the college event on Saturday, which Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also attended. However, the controversy reportedly erupted after the Chief Minister left the venue.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the singer allegedly lost his temper during the performance and used objectionable language on stage, leaving students, faculty members and even police personnel present at the event uncomfortable.
Commission Calls Conduct ‘Unacceptable’
Confirming the action, Chairperson Renu Bhatia said that since both male and female students were present at the programme, such behaviour by a public figure at a public event is “completely unacceptable.”
The Commission underscored that artists, especially those with a large youth following, must uphold standards of dignity, decency and social responsibility.
Singer Issues Apology
Following the backlash, Masoom Sharma released a video message apologising for the incident. He attributed his behaviour to mental stress at the time, expressing regret over the episode.
Wider Debate on Content and Accountability
The incident has once again brought into focus the ongoing debate over vulgarity, artistic freedom and accountability in the entertainment industry, especially as performers increasingly engage with young audiences in live settings.
With the Commission now stepping in, the case is expected to test how regulatory bodies balance freedom of expression with societal norms and public responsibility.
