Mumbai: The immortal voice behind “Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahi” has fallen silent forever. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, leaving behind an unparalleled musical legacy that defined generations of Indian cinema.

She had been admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai after suffering a cardiac arrest and pulmonary complications. According to her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, the veteran singer was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening due to a chest infection and exhaustion. Doctors later confirmed that she succumbed to multi-organ failure.

A Voice That Defined Emotion and Era

From the playful charm of “Aaja Aaja” to the haunting depth of “Chain Se Humko Kabhi” and the eternal romance of “Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar”, Asha Bhosle’s voice captured every shade of human emotion. Her songs didn’t just play—they lingered, resonated, and became part of people’s lives.

For decades, alongside her sister Lata Mangeshkar, she dominated the golden era of Hindi playback singing, becoming the voice of countless leading ladies across generations—from Meena Kumari and Madhubala to Kajol and Urmila Matondkar.

Personal Life and Legacy

Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra, Asha was trained in music by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar. Music ran deep in the family, with siblings Lata, Usha, Meena, and Hridaynath all contributing significantly to Indian music.

She married Ganpatrao Bhosle at the age of 16 and later found companionship and creative synergy with R D Burman. She is survived by her son, Anand, and her grandchildren.

Beyond Music

Apart from her illustrious singing career, Asha Bhosle also made her mark as an entrepreneur, running successful restaurants under her name in Dubai and the UK. Even in her 90s, she remained active, performing at the ASHA@90 concert in Dubai in 2023—a testament to her enduring passion for music.
