Chandigarh: Panic gripped residents near the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sector 37 office and the adjoining Law Bhavan on Wednesday evening after a low-intensity explosion-like sound was reported in the area.
The incident occurred around 5.30 pm, reportedly involving a two-wheeler parked near the BJP office. The area, which also houses a blood bank and a petrol pump, is considered a busy stretch with several key establishments.
According to initial reports, several BJP leaders were present in the office when a blast-like sound was heard. Party representatives immediately alerted the police.
Police, BSF Rush to Spot
Senior police officials, including Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, reached the site to assess the situation. The area was swiftly cordoned off, and BSF personnel were deployed as a precautionary measure. “It is too early to determine the exact nature of the blast. It appears that a two-wheeler was impacted,” SSP Kaur said.
Preliminary Findings
Eyewitness Jaswinder Singh, a staffer at the BJP office, said that a two-wheeler parked outside caught fire following the incident. “We initially thought it was a battery explosion, but it turned out to be a petrol vehicle. Window panes of a couple of nearby cars were damaged,” he said.
No Casualties, Probe On
No injuries have been reported so far. Authorities are examining whether a mechanical fault, a fuel-related ignition, or another factor caused the incident. Security agencies continue to scan the area, and further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
