New Delhi: The Supreme Court will convene a Special Vacation Bench on Monday to hear 17 urgent matters requiring immediate judicial intervention during the court’s Christmas–New Year recess.
According to an official statement, the Bench will be led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and will assemble at 11 am on December 22. The cases listed include a mix of criminal and civil matters flagged for urgency.
The Supreme Court remains closed for regular functioning from December 22 to January 5, 2026, reopening after the New Year. The special sitting has been arranged to ensure that time-sensitive cases are not delayed during the vacation period.
On Friday, CJI Kant had made it clear that he would personally sit on the first day of the holidays to hear urgent matters. “We will sit on Monday. I will not burden other judges who would otherwise have to examine files late at night,” he had said, adding that only matters verified as urgent by the Registry would be listed.
Emphasising access and efficiency, the CJI also encouraged junior advocates seeking urgent listings to argue their own matters before the Vacation Bench. “All those in the queue seeking listing—will you argue on Monday? We are ready to sit,” he remarked in court.
The move underscores the top court’s effort to balance judicial vacations with the need for swift intervention in pressing cases.
