Delhi Police Arrest ISI-Linked Gangster Behind Canada Cafe Shootings
New Delhi: In a chilling revelation, the Delhi Crime Branch has arrested Ludhiana-based gangster Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon, who has now confessed that his gang had planned to assassinate comedian Kapil Sharma if the extortion money demanded from him was not paid. Canadian authorities want Sekhon for his role in the repeated shooting attacks on Kapil Sharma’s ‘Kap’s Cafe’ in Surrey, Canada.
During interrogation, Sekhon revealed that the cafe attacks were meant to build terror and force Sharma into paying protection money. Police sources said the killing plan was ready and would have been executed if the extortion failed.
ISI Operative’s Key Aide, Goldy Dhillon’s Right-Hand Man
According to investigators, Sekhon is the right-hand man of ISI operative Harry Chatha and a close associate of gangster Goldy Dhillon, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the attacks on the cafe. After the second attack in Canada, Sekhon fled the country on August 22 and quietly returned to India, attempting to remain under the radar in his hometown of Ludhiana. However, Delhi Police eventually tracked him down and arrested him. He was also captured on CCTV footage sitting on the front seat of the car alongside the shooters during one of the attacks.
Shooters Identified, Body Cameras Used to Spread Fear
Police have identified the two shooters as Daljot Rehal and Gurjot. Investigators revealed that the attackers wore body cameras while opening fire, and later circulated the footage on social media to amplify the threat and create panic.
Chinese Pistol Led Police to Sekhon
Special Commissioner of Police Devesh Srivastava said that the breakthrough came after police seized a cache of foreign-made weapons from arms traffickers in Delhi. During verification, a Chinese-made PX-3 pistol was found missing.
On questioning, the traffickers pointed to a buyer based in Ludhiana, which eventually led investigators to Sekhon. A team led by DCP Sanjeev Yadav, along with Inspectors Man Singh and Sunder Gautam, traced and arrested him from a local gym.
Kap’s Cafe Targeted Three Times: Full Timeline
First Attack – July 9:
Gunshots were fired at Kap’s Cafe by a shooter wearing a body camera. Soon after, Goldy Dhillon’s aides claimed responsibility on social media, calling it retaliation for alleged past remarks made on Kapil Sharma’s show.
Second Attack – Within a Month:
According to DCP Sanjeev Yadav, the attackers again fired at the cafe, later posting online that Kapil Sharma had not responded to their calls, prompting the repeat attack. The post also threatened action in Mumbai, triggering an immediate security review for Sharma.
Third Attack – October 7:
Just two weeks after the cafe reopened, another drive-by shooting took place, confirming the sustained and organised nature of the threat.
Canada Crackdown Forced Sekhon to Flee
After the second attack, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intensified its crackdown on the gang. During this phase, one gang member, identified as Seepu, was arrested. As pressure mounted, Sekhon fled to India to avoid arrest. Once back in India, he maintained a low profile in Ludhiana until his arrest by the Delhi Crime Branch.
International Crime, Terror Funding and Direct Threat to Kapil Sharma
Police officials now confirm that the attacks were part of a cross-border extortion and terror network. The gang had finalised plans to assassinate Kapil Sharma. The operation involved ISI-linked handlers and Canada-based shooters. The case has now escalated beyond gangster rivalry into a national security concern. Indian and Canadian authorities are now expected to share intelligence and coordinate further action against the remaining fugitives in the network.
