Chandigarh: On the occasion of Haryana Day, Director General of Police (DGP) O.P. Singh extended his greetings to the people of the state and appealed to them to help children grow into responsible, disciplined, and value-based citizens. “My dear people of Haryana, on the occasion of Haryana Day, heartfelt greetings to you and your family. Your safety and well-being are our goal and our commitment,” the DGP said in his message.

Congratulating parents whose children are attending school, Singh said watching children grow was an exhilarating experience. “But we must also remember that children are the heritage of the nation and the torchbearers of its future. Helping them become strong and aware citizens is our social and national duty,” he said.

Emphasising that children learn more from what they see than what they are told, the DGP advised parents to be mindful of their own conduct. “Listen carefully to your children. Where they are right, appreciate and encourage them — it will make them stronger. Where they are wrong, show them the right direction. If you do not pay attention, they may forget what is right,” he said.

He urged parents to encourage children to try new things, saying that mistakes and disappointments were a natural part of learning. “The purpose of life is to recognise what we are good at and to strive for excellence in it. Become problem solvers and value creators,” he said, adding that society needs individuals who never give up.

Warning against the misuse of the Internet, Singh called it both “a powerful medium to connect and learn” and “a growing source of fraud and deceit.” He said parents must ensure that children do not remain glued to screens but engage in real-world activities such as sports, music, and teamwork.

“Spend time with your children. Keep them away from bad company and negative habits. Motivate them to stay away from drugs and gang activities,” Singh said. Recalling a journalist’s question about a father’s role in a child’s criminal behaviour, he remarked, “Becoming something requires patience — and that must be repeatedly emphasised. Just as wise families present healthy eating as a lifestyle to protect their children from junk food, they should adopt the same approach against drugs.”

He further encouraged parents to help children set clear goals for the next five years and create an environment that inspires them to work towards those objectives.

Highlighting the growing menace of cybercrime, Singh observed, “How you behave offline reflects how you behave online. Do not be afraid. Government institutions work within the framework of law. There is no such thing as a ‘digital arrest.’ If you suspect any fraud, immediately call 1930 or 112.”

Drawing an analogy between life’s challenges and storms, the DGP said, “Storms and tempests keep coming — protection lies in closing windows and doors. Similarly, challenges in life come and go, but we must keep our courage alive.”

Concluding his message, Singh said that the spirit, resilience, and confidence of the people of Haryana are the state’s greatest strengths. “Jai Hind! Jai Haryana!” the DGP said.
