Rejecting the idea of retirement as a complete stop, Singh described it as merely a comma, asserting that meaningful public service must continue as long as one remains capable.
Chandigarh: In a rare and deeply moving gesture, outgoing Director General of Police O.P. Singh on Wednesday addressed a heartfelt farewell letter to officers and jawans of the Haryana Police, capturing the emotional weight of a policing journey that began over three decades ago and concluded on December 31, 2025.
Addressed to the police force- “my dear jawans and officers,” the New Year message evolved into a valedictory reflection on duty, reform, leadership and service. Singh noted that 2025 saw a marked decline in heinous and organised crimes compared to 2024, crediting the collective commitment, discipline and professionalism of the force for the improvement in Haryana’s law-and-order landscape.
At the same time, he cautioned that 2026 would bring sharper challenges, with crimes becoming more complex, tech-driven and organised. He urged officers to remain proactive, intelligence-led and uncompromising against repeat offenders, organised gangs and extortion rackets, while strengthening crime analysis, cyber policing and preventive frameworks.
Recalling his induction into the IPS in 1992, Singh reflected on the quiet symmetry of time — that he had long known December 31, 2025, would mark the end of his formal service. Quoting Alfred Lord Tennyson’s line, “I am a part of all that I have met,” he acknowledged how every posting, colleague and challenge shaped both the officer and the individual within him.
Rejecting the idea of retirement as a complete stop, Singh described it as merely a comma, asserting that meaningful public service must continue as long as one remains capable. He highlighted the reforms and initiatives undertaken during his tenure — from cybercrime prevention and forensic strengthening to data-driven policing, digital communication, skill upgradation and modern investigation practices — which, he said, helped prepare Haryana Police for future realities.
Touching on the broader democratic ethos, Singh wrote that the actual struggle for freedom today lies in combating fear, injustice, and social division — a responsibility that rests heavily on the shoulders of the police.
Concluding his message with humility and quiet pride, the outgoing DGP wrote that his identity is inseparable from the IPS and Haryana Police, and whatever he has become is a shared journey with the force. He signed off with a couplet of Kabir Sahib, summing up his life in uniform with profound simplicity:
“दास कबीर जतन से ओढ़ी,
ज्यों-की-त्यों धर दीन्ही चदरिया।”
A farewell not marked by ceremony, but by conscience — OP Singh’s letter stands as a rare reminder of the human soul behind the uniform.
