Chandigarh: The two-month leave of Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur ended on December 13, but uncertainty continues over whether he will return as the state’s top police officer. Kapur was sent on extended leave from October 14 after his name surfaced in connection with the suicide case of IPS officer Y. Pooran Kumar. While his leave period has formally ended, government sources indicate that the state is not inclined to reinstate him as DGP.
Likely to Be Shifted to Another Post
Sources said the government is preparing to adjust Kapur to another position, and his name is likely to feature in the IPS transfer list expected to be issued on Sunday.
Following Kapur’s exit on leave, IPS officer O. P. Singh was given additional charge of DGP. However, Singh is due to retire on December 31, and the Centre has not approved his six-month extension, making it almost certain that a new full-time DGP will be appointed from January 1, 2026.
New Roles for Kapur
Government sources said Kapur could be accommodated either as head of the Narcotics Control Bureau or in the Energy Department headed by Minister Anil Vij. His transfer file has reportedly reached the Chief Minister’s Office, and formal approval is expected on Sunday.
Transfer Key Again, New DGP Panel Is Sent
Only after Kapur’s transfer is finalised will the state government send a fresh panel of officers to the UPSC for the appointment of a new DGP. Earlier, the UPSC returned the government’s proposed panel, stating that Kapur was merely on leave. The Commission did not treat the DGP post as vacant, since it was not formally recorded that Kapur had completed his mandatory two-year tenure. This time, the government plans to clearly mention that Kapur’s two-year term as DGP has concluded, paving the way for a new appointment.
Likely Names in the DGP Panel
According to sources, the proposed panel for the DGP post is expected to include: Sanjeev Kumar Jain (1991 batch), Alok Mittal (1992 batch), Arshinder Chawla (1993 batch) and Ajay Singhal (1993 batch).
