Kurukshetra: Five men were found dead on Tuesday morning after allegedly inhaling toxic fumes from a coal brazier kept inside a hotel room where they had been sleeping overnight.
The deceased included a contractor and four labourers who had arrived from Saharanpur on Monday evening to carry out painting work at the hotel, police said. According to preliminary information, the men lit a coal brazier in the room to keep warm during the night, then shut the door and windows. The lack of ventilation is suspected to have led to suffocation while they were asleep.
Hotel staff grew suspicious in the morning when there was no response from the room. After finding it locked from the inside and hearing no movement, they alerted the hotel manager, who informed the police. The room was subsequently opened in the presence of police officials.
All five men were found lying unconscious and were declared dead. The bodies were shifted to LNJP Hospital for postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police have initiated an investigation and said further details will emerge after the postmortem reports are received.
