Chandigarh/Mohali/Panchkula: Authorities in the tricity region issued flood alerts on Friday after heavy overnight rainfall pushed the Ghaggar river beyond safe levels and forced the opening of floodgates at Sukhna Lake.
The Ghaggar, which enters Punjab at Mubarikpur village in Mohali, was flowing at over 70,000 cusecs on Friday morning. In Dera Bassi, nine villages — Tiwana, Khajoor Mandi, Sadhanpur, Sarsini, Alamgir, Dangdhera, Mubarikpur, Mirpur, and Bakarpur — have been placed on high alert.
Dera Bassi SDM Amit Kumar said police, drainage, and revenue teams were on the ground and the situation was “under control.” Mohali DC Komal Mittal also inspected Tiwana village.
The Dehar–Alamgir–Tiwana embankment remains a major concern; a 4,500-foot breach in 2023 caused widespread damage to farmland, leaving fields buried under nearly two feet of silt and sand.
In Zirakpur, the Sukhna choe overflowed at Baltana bridge, while the Mubarikpur causeway was also inundated.
Meanwhile, in Chandigarh, two of the three Sukhna Lake floodgates were opened at 3:30 am and 4 am as the water level crossed the danger mark of 1,163 feet. This is the sixth time this monsoon that gates have been opened. The UT Engineering Department has deployed staff round-the-clock, with CCTV surveillance and a dedicated control room coordinating with Mohali and Panchkula administrations.
In Panchkula, heavy rain wreaked havoc in rural areas. At Khatouli village (Barwala block), the approach road to a local bridge collapsed after water flow eroded the soil beneath. Commuting has been severely affected, and residents have been advised to avoid the route until further notice.Officials have urged people in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain alert and follow district administration advisories.
