Chandigarh: In a shocking incident, Haryana’s Additional Director General of Police (IGP) Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. He is believed to have used his service revolver to take his own life.
The incident reportedly occurred earlier in the day. Police teams, including forensic experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), rushed to the spot as news spread of the senior IPS officer’s death.
Confirming the development, Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur said, “Information regarding a reported suicide was received from House No. 116, Sector 11, Chandigarh, around 1.30 p.m. today. The deceased has been identified as Y. Puran Kumar, IPS (2001 batch), of the Haryana cadre. The CFSL team is at the spot, and further investigation is underway.”
According to sources, police have seized Kumar’s mobile phones and official documents from the residence as part of the investigation. At the time of the incident, Kumar’s wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer currently posted as Commissioner, Secretary (Foreign Cooperation Department), Government of Haryana, was away in Japan. She is part of an official delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and is expected to return on Wednesday morning.
Preliminary information suggests that Kumar had taken his service weapon from his gunner on Monday. His daughter reportedly found him in the soundproof basement of their residence.
Kumar’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Haryana police and administrative circles. Known for his professionalism and integrity, the 2001-batch IPS officer had held several key postings in his career.
Last month, he was transferred to Sunaria Jail, Rohtak, where Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is currently serving a sentence in a sexual exploitation case. Before his transfer, Kumar had made headlines for raising questions over the promotion of certain IPS officers from the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches.
Police officials said the exact cause behind his extreme step is yet to be established. The investigation is underway, and a post-mortem will be conducted at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh.
