Mohali: Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi suffered a cardiac arrest late Thursday night and was rushed to a private hospital in Mohali, where he underwent bypass heart surgery, sources said.
According to officials, Rastogi complained of severe chest pain after suddenly feeling unwell, following which he was taken to Fortis Hospital Mohali. The surgery was performed under the supervision of senior cardiac surgeon Dr P S Mahant.
Hospital sources said the 1990-batch IAS officer is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is stable. He is expected to remain on bed rest for at least a couple of months as part of his recovery.
In an official medical bulletin, Fortis Hospital said:
“Shri Anurag Rastogi, IAS, Chief Secretary, Haryana, was admitted for a bypass heart surgery at Fortis Hospital Mohali on January 9, 2026. Following an uneventful surgery, Shri Anurag Rastogi is stable and recovering in the CTVS Intensive Care Unit.”
Rastogi was originally scheduled to retire on June 30, 2025, but was granted a one-year extension by the Centre last year on the recommendation of the Haryana government.
A senior and experienced administrator, Rastogi has held several key positions in the Haryana government. Prior to assuming charge as Chief Secretary, he served as Financial Commissioner (Revenue) and Additional Chief Secretary (Finance).
Officials said further updates on his health condition would be shared as advised by the medical team.
