Chandigarh: The Haryana Police have launched a focused, statewide digital crackdown against fake apps and objectionable content circulating on social media, stepping up efforts to curb misinformation, online fraud and content that threatens public harmony. Cyber Haryana is spearheading the drive in coordination with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Over the past month, cyber teams have maintained round-the-clock monitoring of major social media platforms. As part of the operation, 1,018 objectionable links and profiles—including misleading posts, inflammatory content and material capable of disturbing public peace—have been flagged. Of these, 583 links have already been removed or blocked, while action is underway on the remaining 435, which are under review by the platforms following notices issued under the IT Act.

Director General of Police Ajay Singhal said the department has also launched a parallel drive against suspicious trading and investment apps, a growing source of online scams. Since January 12, Cyber Haryana has identified 28 dubious apps and channels; 14 have been taken down, and the rest are in the final stages of removal. The objective, he said, is to reduce financial fraud and strengthen citizens’ digital safety significantly.

Senior officers cautioned that even a single misleading post can have serious consequences in today’s hyper-connected digital ecosystem. Citizens have been urged to verify information before sharing, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and thoroughly check apps before investing money.

Additional Director General of Police (Cyber) Sibash Kabiraj said the campaign aims to build a safer, more responsible online environment, adding that public awareness and cooperation are critical to its success.

Authorities reiterated that no leniency would be shown to those spreading misinformation or running fraudulent digital operations, and that swift takedown requests would continue wherever violations are detected.
