Chandigarh: Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide at his Chandigarh residence earlier this week.

Hooda said that justice must prevail without bias or delay. “No culprit should be spared, and no innocent should be harmed. It is the state government’s responsibility to ensure justice in this case,” he said. The veteran Congress leader expressed deep concern over what he described as a complete collapse of law and order in Haryana.

“The suicide of such a senior and decorated police officer is a very tragic incident that has shaken the entire state. If a senior police officer is not safe today, one can imagine the plight of ordinary citizens,” Hooda remarked.

On October 8, Ambala Congress MP Varun Chaudhary had also raised serious allegations that senior officers in the BJP government were harassing Scheduled Caste (SC) officers, driving many into mental distress.“An FIR should be registered against those officials whose names have been mentioned in the suicide note. Also, all documents recovered from Kumar’s house should be preserved,” Chaudhary had demanded.

Echoing similar sentiments, Sirsa MP and former Union Minister Kumari Selja said the incident was not only a personal tragedy but a reflection of deeper systemic failures.“If an honest and upright officer is compelled to take such an extreme step because of harassment or administrative apathy, it raises serious questions about the functioning of the system,” she said.

Selja called for a high-level and impartial inquiry to bring out the truth and ensure accountability.“I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. At the same time, I urge that the truth must come out so that no other officer has to face such a situation in future,” she added.
