Chandigarh: Former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics only if the Congress declares him as the party’s chief ministerial face for Punjab, his wife and party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu said. Speaking to the media after meeting with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said that while they do not possess the kind of money needed to “buy power,” they can transform Punjab into a “golden state.”
“We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat. But we do not have Rs 500 crore to give to any party to sit in the chief minister’s chair. If any party gives Sidhu that power to serve Punjab, we will deliver results and turn the state into a golden Punjab,” she said.
‘Money Has Replaced Merit in Politics’
Without naming anyone, Navjot Kaur Sidhu remarked that in today’s politics, those who can produce “a suitcase of Rs 500 crore” are being elevated to top positions. “Nobody has directly demanded money from us, but the reality is that the one who brings Rs 500 crore becomes the chief minister,” she alleged. She maintained that Sidhu entered politics for public welfare, not for business, and that financial muscle should not determine leadership.
Infighting in Punjab Congress Blocking Sidhu: Wife
Navjot Kaur Sidhu also pointed to deep infighting within the Punjab Congress, claiming that multiple leaders are already staking claim to the chief minister’s post. “There are already five CM aspirants in the Punjab Congress. They will never allow Sidhu to come forward. In fact, they are so busy fighting each other that they may end up defeating their own party,” she said.
She added that Sidhu remains emotionally attached to the Congress and to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, but the factionalism within the party remains a significant roadblock. “If the high command understands this reality, then it is a different matter,” she said.
BJP Option, Political Future and Sidhu’s Break from Politics
When asked whether Sidhu would consider returning to the BJP if offered a leadership role, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said she could not comment on his behalf. However, she made it clear that Sidhu will return to active politics if the Congress makes him the CM face. “Otherwise, he is earning well and is happy in his present life,” she added.
Sidhu has mainly remained inactive in party affairs for several months, did not campaign during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and has instead returned to cricket commentary during the IPL 2024 season.
In April, he also launched his YouTube channel ‘Navjot Sidhu Official’, where he shares views on life, cricket, motivation, and lifestyle. At that time, he had said that his return to active politics would depend on circumstances. The next Punjab Assembly elections are scheduled for 2027.
