Chandigarh: The wife of senior Haryana Police officer Y. Puran Kumar, who allegedly shot himself dead at his Chandigarh residence on Tuesday, reached the city on Wednesday afternoon from Japan, where she was part of an official delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Saini.
Amneet P. Kumar, a 2001-batch IAS officer and Commissioner and Secretary in the Haryana Government’s Department of Foreign Cooperation, was immediately received by senior bureaucrats, who also conveyed their condolences. Following her arrival, the postmortem examination of Kumar’s body, which had been withheld till then, was scheduled to be conducted.
A 2001-batch IPS officer, Y. Puran Kumar (52), was known for his integrity and strong views on service rights, seniority, and fairness in cadre matters. He had recently taken charge as the Inspector General of Police Training Centre (PTC) in Rohtak’s Sunaria, after a tenure as IG, Rohtak Range.
Police recovered a 9-page note and a will from his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh, along with the weapon believed to have been used in the incident. Both physical and electronic evidence have been seized by the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) team for examination and analysis. Kumar’s body was found with a gunshot wound in the basement of his home on Tuesday afternoon, after police received information around 1.30 pm.
The IPS officer, an engineering graduate, had served in several key postings across Haryana, including Ambala, Rohtak, and Kurukshetra, and was due to retire in May 2033. His untimely death has sent shockwaves across the state’s police and administrative circles. Kumar was respected for his uprightness, professionalism, and mentorship to younger officers.
Meanwhile, his death has also raised concerns among colleagues and family members over the pressure he reportedly faced following the inclusion of his name in a bribery-related FIR in Rohtak, allegedly without mandatory government approval. As investigations continue, many officers describe Kumar’s passing as a “deep personal and institutional loss” to the Haryana Police Service.
