Unidentified assailants reportedly opened fire late Wednesday late night at ‘KAP’S CAFE’, a newly opened restaurant owned by popular comedian and actor Kapil Sharma, in Surrey, British Columbia. No casualties have been reported so far.
In a disturbing development, Harjit Singh Laddi, a known operative of the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and one of the NIA’s most wanted fugitives, has allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
While the motive behind the firing remains unclear, the incident has raised serious security concerns, especially given the involvement of a designated terror outfit. Authorities in Canada have launched a full-scale investigation, and a formal statement from either Kapil Sharma or local law enforcement is awaited.
The shooting took place just days after Kapil and his wife Ginni Chatrath soft-launched the café, which is located in a prominent area of Surrey. The establishment, named ‘KAP’S CAFE’, had quickly begun attracting attention from local patrons and fans, with recent social media posts showing crowded interiors and a warm reception from visitors.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over pro-Khalistan extremism and gang-linked violence in parts of Canada, especially British Columbia, which has a large Punjabi diaspora. Authorities are also likely to probe if the attack was part of a broader intimidation or extortion campaign.
As the investigation unfolds, heightened security is expected around the café and in the area. The Indian government may also take note, given the high-profile nature of the victim and the involvement of a wanted terrorist.
