Chandigarh: Punjab State Commission for Women chairperson Raj Lali Gill on Monday revealed that popular Punjabi singers Karan Aujla and Honey Singh have expressed regret for allegedly using “objectionable language” against women in their recent songs.

The Commission had, on August 7, taken suo motu cognisance of complaints regarding derogatory references to women in Aujla’s track MF Gabru and Honey Singh’s Millionaire. Acting under its powers vested by Section 12 of the Punjab State Commission for Women Act, 2001, the panel had directed the Punjab Police to conduct an inquiry and submit a detailed report.

Speaking to reporters, Gill said she personally contacted both artists, who are currently abroad for work commitments. “They promised me that they will come and meet me. They also feel very sorry about it,” Gill said, adding that both singers have assured her of their appearance before the Commission within the next 15 days.

The Commission had earlier issued letters to the Punjab Director General of Police, instructing that both artists be present at its office on August 11. Assistant Inspector General of Police Yadvinder Singh Sandhu has since reached out to the singers’ representatives and legal teams, who are expected to submit written explanations within two to three days.

Gill made it clear that such lyrical content will not be tolerated. “Songs using objectionable language against women set a wrong precedent for society. There should be stricter laws to prevent such content,” she asserted.

The controversy has reignited a debate over the influence of Punjabi pop culture on societal attitudes towards women, with many activists demanding accountability from high-profile artists whose music enjoys massive youth followings.
