New Delhi/Chandigarh: A key operative of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Aman Bhainswal, was repatriated from the United States on Wednesday following a coordinated international operation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), officials said.

Bhainswal, who was facing an Interpol Red Notice, is wanted by the Haryana Police in multiple criminal cases involving murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy. According to the CBI, the Red Notice was issued by Interpol at the request of Haryana Police, after Bhainswal allegedly evaded trial in India and fled abroad.

Absconded After Bail, Tracked Abroad

“The accused is a notorious criminal and a key member of an organised criminal gang, namely the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. He was earlier arrested in India and was later granted bail. However, he did not face trial and subsequently absconded,” a CBI spokesperson said.

Following the issuance of the Interpol Red Notice, Bhainswal was traced and geolocated in the United States, after which Indian authorities initiated deportation proceedings in coordination with US agencies.

Deported, Arrested at Delhi Airport

Officials said Bhainswal was successfully deported from the US and arrived in India on January 7, 2026. Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, he was taken into custody by an exceptional team of the Haryana Police.

“He was immediately detained at the airport and formally arrested by the Haryana Police team that had travelled to Delhi to receive him,” an official said.

Major Breakthrough Against Organised Crime

Security agencies described the repatriation as a significant breakthrough in the crackdown on organised crime networks with international footprints. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been under intense scrutiny for its alleged involvement in extortion, targeted killings and cross-border criminal operations.

Officials said Bhainswal will now be produced before a competent court in Haryana, and further legal proceedings will follow. Investigators are also expected to question him to trace the gang’s overseas links, funding channels and operational networks. The CBI said the operation underscores India’s growing success in leveraging international cooperation mechanisms to bring back fugitives and ensure that absconding criminals face justice, regardless of where they flee.
