Mumbai: The last rites of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle were performed at Shivaji Park on Monday afternoon with full state honours, as the nation bid an emotional farewell to one of its most iconic musical voices.
The 92-year-old singer, who mesmerised audiences for over seven decades with her extraordinary versatility and timeless songs, passed away on Sunday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital due to multi-organ failure.
Her mortal remains were earlier kept at her residence in Lower Parel, where family members, admirers, and dignitaries gathered to pay their final respects. People from across the city and the film fraternity visited her home to bid a last farewell before the funeral procession moved to Shivaji Park.
Among those who paid homage was Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who offered floral tributes and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. State Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, along with legislators Sunil Shinde and Prasad Lad, also paid their respects.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, had earlier informed that the public could pay homage to the legendary singer at her residence in the morning before the final rites at 4 pm.
Fondly known as Ashatai, Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unparalleled musical legacy spanning thousands of songs across genres—from soulful ghazals to peppy cabaret numbers—cementing her place as one of the greatest voices in Indian cinema.
A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Maharashtra Bhushan, her passing marks the end of an era, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the country and beyond.
