Chandigarh: Argentine footballer Lionel Messi’s sister, Maria Sol Messi, has reportedly been forced to suspend her wedding scheduled for January 3 after sustaining serious injuries in a traffic accident in Miami. According to a report by The Sun, the 32-year-old was injured after losing control of her pick-up truck and crashing into a wall. She reportedly suffered spinal fractures, burns and multiple other injuries, and is undergoing treatment.
Maria Sol, a clothing designer and entrepreneur, has largely stayed away from the public spotlight. She had earlier lived in Spain before returning to Argentina to pursue her independent ventures.
Quoting Argentine television journalist Ángel de Brito, the report said Messi’s mother, Celia Cuccittini, confirmed that Maria Sol is now out of danger. Still, doctors have advised a long and careful rehabilitation.
Speaking on America TV’s programme LAM, de Brito said Maria Sol was set to marry Julián “Tuli” Arellano, a member of Inter Miami’s under-19 coaching staff, in Rosario, Argentina. Still, the ceremony has been postponed in view of her medical condition. “She suffered burns, which are very difficult to treat, and displacement of vertebrae,” de Brito said, adding that rehabilitation has already begun in Rosario.
The wedding was to be held in the Messi family’s hometown of Rosario—the same city where Lionel Messi married Antonela Roccuzzo—and several members of the Messi family were expected to attend. Like her famous brother, Maria Sol and her partner also grew up in the same neighbourhood. Family sources say the focus for now remains entirely on her recovery, with wedding plans to be revisited once doctors give clearance.
