Alert Over Red Fort, Nationwide Module Unearthed
The arrests came amid heightened security following an intelligence alert warning of a possible explosion near the historic Red Fort. Central intelligence agencies had indicated that Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) had allegedly placed prominent religious sites in India on its target list. Officials said the crackdown was launched based on specific inputs about an active module suspected of planning subversive activities across different parts of the country.
Six Arrested in Tamil Nadu, Foreign Links Under Scanner
Of the eight suspects, six were arrested from various locations in Tamil Nadu and are being brought to Delhi for sustained interrogation. Two others were detained earlier as part of follow-up action linked to the same investigation.
Sources revealed that some of the arrested individuals are believed to be Bangladeshi nationals. During extensive searches, police recovered dozens of mobile phones and SIM cards, which are now undergoing forensic and digital analysis to trace communication trails and establish possible cross-border links.
Preliminary investigations suggest the group was in contact with handlers allegedly linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as well as certain Bangladesh-based extremist outfits. Central agencies are assisting Delhi Police in mapping the full extent of the network and identifying any sleeper cells.
IED Threat and Link to Islamabad Blast
Intelligence inputs had warned that the terror module could be planning an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-based attack. Sources indicated that the alleged plot may be linked to attempts by LeT to avenge the February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The alert also comes against the backdrop of the deadly November 10, 2025, car explosion near the Red Fort, which killed 13 people and injured more than 20. The blast occurred when a car packed with explosives detonated near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro station, triggering panic and chaos in the densely populated area and setting multiple vehicles ablaze.
Security has since been tightened across sensitive locations in the national capital, particularly around religious sites and heritage monuments. Investigators are now focused on uncovering the operational chain, funding channels, and potential collaborators within India. Officials described the arrests as a “preventive strike” that may have averted a major tragedy, while warning that vigilance remains high amid evolving security threats.
