New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government is determined to eradicate narcotics from India and is making an all-out effort to achieve this goal. Addressing the Second National Conference of Heads of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of States and Union Territories, organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Shah called for a “change in the scale of action” to ensure more successes against the drug menace in the coming days.
“The Modi government is committed to wipe out the drug menace from the country. Prime Minister Modi has set forth the vision of creating an India by 2047 that will be fully developed, fully secure, and the world’s number one in every aspect. For this, our youth are the biggest hope, and if they are determined, nothing is impossible,” Shah said.
Underscoring the urgency, the Home Minister noted that India is geographically vulnerable, with two of the world’s largest drug-supplying regions located nearby. “This is the time to fight against it strongly. Saving the young generation from drugs is critical to achieving the goal of a developed India,” he added.
Shah outlined three categories of narcotics cartels—those at the country’s entry points, those that distribute across states, and the smaller networks operating through kiosks and shops. “The time has come to deal a big blow to all three cartels. This can happen only when officers responsible for anti-drug operations resolve to take strong, decisive action,” he said.
In a symbolic move, Shah initiated the destruction of narcotics worth Rs 4,794 crore seized across different parts of the country. He also released the NCB’s annual report 2024, stressing that the agency has been coordinating with the GST department, state drug controllers, Income Tax authorities, and financial institutions to track and dismantle diversion networks.
Framing the anti-drug drive as part of PM Modi’s vision for a developed India at 100 years of independence, Shah said: “Drugs not only ruin lives but weaken the nation from within. To build a secure and strong India by 2047, we must eliminate this menace completely.”
