Tragic Accident Caught on CCTV at Lakhan Majra Sports Complex
Chandigarh: A 16-year-old national-level basketball player lost his life in a horrifying freak accident during practice at a sports complex in Haryana’s Rohtak district, after an iron pole supporting a basketball hoop suddenly collapsed and fell on his chest. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at Lakhan Majra village and was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the facility.
The deceased has been identified as Hardik, a promising young cager who had earlier represented his state at the sub-junior national championship. The CCTV footage shows Hardik reaching for the hoop during practice, and as he attempted to hang from it in a routine move, the heavy iron structure gave way, crashing down on him within seconds. The impact left him grievously injured.
Players who were sitting courtside rushed to rescue him and immediately took him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead. Lakhan Majra SHO Samarjeet Singh confirmed the sequence of events and said that police were alerted soon after the incident.
Probe Launched into Equipment Safety and Maintenance Lapses
Officials stated that a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the pole’s collapse. “The condition of the basketball structure, its installation method, and whether proper safety standards were followed are all being examined,” a police officer said. The sports complex authorities are also likely to face scrutiny for possible negligence in maintenance and safety inspection.
Police have recorded statements from witnesses present at the scene and secured CCTV footage as key evidence. A case of negligence may be registered depending on the findings of the preliminary inquiry.
CM Nayab Singh Saini Seeks Full Report
Reacting to the tragic incident, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Wednesday that he would first gather complete details related to the matter before making any further comment.
“I will examine all aspects of the incident after getting the full report,” the Chief Minister told reporters, indicating that accountability would be fixed once the investigation establishes responsibility.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the sporting community in Haryana, raising serious concerns over the safety of sports infrastructure at grassroots training centres. Hardik’s sudden death has also brought grief to his family, teammates and coaches, who described him as a hardworking and disciplined player with a bright future ahead.
