Punjab Congress Infighting Raises Alarm
Chandigarh: The Congress high command has sought a detailed report from AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel following suspended party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s explosive allegation that a “₹500 crore payment” is required to become Punjab’s Chief Minister.
Sources said the party leadership is deeply concerned after Navjot Kaur levelled corruption charges against top Punjab Congress leaders, including PCC chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
High Command Probes Allegations, Eyes Factional Rift
According to senior party insiders, the Congress is also examining the allegation that Tarn Taran bypoll candidate Karanbir Burj paid money to secure his candidature. While Burj has denied the charge, the leadership is “independently verifying” the claim.
“There is more than what meets the eye,” a senior Congress leader said, noting that Navjot Kaur’s attack seems directed at a specific power group within the Punjab unit at a time when internal lobbying is underway for a change in state leadership ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Navjot Kaur, meanwhile, has maintained that she is “in touch with senior leaders” in Delhi despite her suspension.
Raja Warring Calls Charges a ‘Conspiracy’
Punjab Congress president Raja Warring said the controversy was designed to “weaken the Congress in Punjab” and derail public attention from the Aam Aadmi Party government’s alleged misuse of police during the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections.
“When AAP had no answers on its brutal misuse of police force, attention was instantly diverted by sensational claims that have no base or truth,” Warring said, adding that both the BJP and AAP were “masters in diversion tactics”.Sources said the high command has asked Warring to deal with indiscipline firmly, as factional fire threatens to hurt the party’s prospects well ahead of 2027.
