CP Radhakrishnan secure 452 votes, defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy, who polled 300 votes
New Delhi: NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India after securing 452 votes, defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy, who polled 300 votes. The announcement was made by Returning Officer and Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody on Tuesday evening after the counting of votes concluded in the new Parliament building.
Out of a total of 781 MPs, 767 exercised their franchise. Of these, 752 votes were declared valid, while 15 votes were found invalid. As many as 12 MPs abstained from voting. Voting began at 10 am and concluded at 5 pm, witnessing a turnout of more than 98 per cent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his ballot in the high-profile election. Counting began at 6 pm and the results were announced a little after 7.30 pm.
Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader and two-time MP from Tamil Nadu, was fielded as the NDA’s choice for the constitutional post. He will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose term as Vice President ends shortly.With this victory, the ruling NDA has further consolidated its hold over key constitutional positions, as the Vice President is also the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
