New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a roundtable meeting with leading Indian artificial intelligence start-ups, urging them to build ethical, unbiased, and transparent AI models rooted in data privacy principles and reflective of India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
The interaction was held at the Prime Minister’s residence ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for next month. Notably, 12 Indian AI start-ups that have qualified for the AI for All: Global Impact Challenge participated in the roundtable discussion on ongoing work.
‘Made in India, Made for the World’ AI Vision
Emphasising India’s growing role in the global technology landscape, the Prime Minister said that Indian AI models should be “Made in India, Made for the World”, combining innovation with responsibility and trust.
“The world’s trust in India is our biggest strength,” Modi said, adding that Indian AI solutions must stand out globally for their ethical foundations, inclusivity and transparency. He encouraged start-ups to aim for global leadership while ensuring that technology development remains people-centric and socially responsible.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of local and indigenous content, calling on start-ups to design AI systems that promote regional languages and reflect India’s plural cultural ecosystem. He said India has the potential to emerge as a global hub for affordable, inclusive, and frugal AI.
AI as a Tool for Social Transformation
Highlighting the transformative power of artificial intelligence, Modi said AI would play a crucial role in reshaping society, governance and industry. He noted that the upcoming India AI Impact Summit would position India as a key global voice in shaping the future of AI, particularly for developing economies.
“Start-ups and AI entrepreneurs are the co-architects of India’s future,” the Prime Minister said, stressing that India possesses not only immense innovation capacity but also the ability to implement technology at scale.
Diverse Innovation Landscape
The participating start-ups are working across a broad spectrum of AI-driven domains, including:

Indian language foundation models and multilingual large language models (LLMs)

Speech-to-text, text-to-audio and text-to-video technologies

3D generative AI for e-commerce, marketing and personalised content creation

Engineering simulations, material research and advanced analytics

Healthcare diagnostics and medical research
During the meeting, start-up leaders commended the Centre’s strong policy support and said the centre of gravity of AI innovation and deployment is gradually shifting towards India. They noted that India now offers a robust and enabling ecosystem for AI development, firmly placing the country on the global AI map.
Industry Leaders in Attendance
CEOs and senior representatives from prominent Indian AI companies, including Avataar, BharatGen, Fractal, GAN, Genloop, Gnani, Intellihealth, Sarvam, Shodh AI, Soket AI, Tech Mahindra, and Zenteiq, attended the roundtable. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Jitin Prasada were also present. The interaction reinforced the government’s push to position India as a trusted global leader in responsible AI, blending technological ambition with ethics, inclusion and societal impact.
