Appeals to Punjabis Worldwide to Support Rehabilitation of Flood Victims

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday launched Mission Chardi Kala, a global fundraising campaign aimed at mobilising resources for the state government’s rehabilitation efforts for victims of the devastating 2025 Punjab floods.

In an emotional video message, the Chief Minister said the tragedy had left scars that generations would remember. “The floods did not just bring water, they washed away millions of dreams,” Mann said. He pointed out that 2,300 villages were submerged, over 2 million people affected, five lakh acres of crops destroyed, 56 lives lost, and more than seven lakh people rendered homeless.

The Chief Minister added that the scale of destruction was unprecedented: 3,200 government schools damaged, 19 colleges turned to rubble, 1,400 clinics and hospitals ruined, 8,500 km of roads washed away, and 2,500 bridges collapsed. “According to initial estimates, the damage is around ₹13,800 crore, though the actual loss may be much higher. This is perhaps the biggest tragedy in Punjab’s history. But every time Punjab has faced adversity, we have stood tall with courage and resilience,” he said.

Mann recalled how during the disaster, young volunteers risked their lives to save others, gurdwaras and temples opened their doors to feed the displaced, and communities came together as one family. “Now the time has come to move beyond relief and begin rehabilitation. Farmers need to sow their fields again, children must return to schools, and families must rebuild their homes. That is why we have launched Mission Chardi Kala—which means strength even in sorrow, and hope even in darkness,” he said.

Making a clarion call, the Chief Minister appealed to Punjabis across the globe, as well as citizens of India, industrialists, artists, charitable trusts, and the wider diaspora, to contribute generously. “Punjab needs you today. Every rupee you donate will be used with full honesty and transparency, solely for the rehabilitation and rebuilding of our people,” he assured. Contributions can be made through
