New Delhi: Farmers in Punjab and Haryana continue to face significantly higher indebtedness than the national average, official data tabled in Parliament on Tuesday showed.
Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the average outstanding loan per agricultural household stood at ₹2.03 lakh in Punjab and ₹1.83 lakh in Haryana, compared to the all-India average of ₹74,121.
The data, as of September 30, 2025, revealed that Punjab and Haryana are among the most debt-burdened agrarian states, reflecting intensive farming patterns and high dependence on institutional credit.
The Minister also informed the House that outstanding loans under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme across the country amounted to ₹10.39 lakh crore. The figures were placed before the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, highlighting persistent regional disparities in farm indebtedness even as national averages remain relatively moderate.
