Chandigarh: Constitution Day was observed with dignity and deep constitutional reflection at the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, where Bharatiya Stree Shakti, in collaboration with the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, organised a special programme to mark the historic occasion. The event drew an enthusiastic participation of nearly 200 members of the legal fraternity, including senior advocates, young professionals, and women lawyers.

Delivering the keynote address, Hon’ble Justice Vinod Bhardwaj described the Constitution as far more than a legal document, calling it a “living moral force that defines the soul of the nation.” He emphasised that while laws may evolve with time, the core values of the Constitution—justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity—remain eternal and must guide every institution and citizen.

Justice Bhardwaj particularly highlighted the critical responsibility of lawyers and judges in preserving constitutional morality. “The Constitution can only remain powerful when those tasked with interpreting and defending it practise the highest standards of ethical conduct,” he said. He urged members of the Bar to act not merely as legal representatives but as guardians of public trust, ensuring that justice remains fair, transparent, and accessible to all sections of society. He further reminded the gathering that the strength of democracy rests mainly on the credibility and integrity of the justice delivery system.

The programme was also attended by noted senior advocates Sh. Chetan Mittal and Sh. Baldev Raj Mahajan, who enriched the occasion with their presence. They underlined the enduring relevance of constitutional values and encouraged young lawyers to remain grounded in professional ethics as they navigate the challenges of modern legal practice.

Addressing the gathering, Advocate Geeta Sharma of Bharatiya Stree Shakti highlighted the true spirit behind celebrating Constitution Day. She said the occasion provides an opportunity to reignite collective commitment to justice, equality, and liberty, especially at a time when society is undergoing rapid social, political, and technological transformation. She also stressed the role of women in strengthening constitutional values through legal advocacy and social responsibility.

Several speakers during the programme reflected on the vision of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, recalling how the Constitution was framed not just as a governing document, but as a social promise to uplift the marginalised and ensure dignity for every citizen.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks, reaffirming the united resolve of the legal community to continue safeguarding the supremacy of the Constitution and to work tirelessly in strengthening the democratic framework of the country.
