Chandigarh: Punjab is on high alert as incessant rains and swollen rivers continue to inundate large parts of the state, disrupting normal life and forcing authorities to prepare for possible evacuations.

While heavy downpours persist across Malwa, the Majha and Doaba regions along the Ravi and Beas rivers are bearing the brunt of the floods. Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts have been worst affected. Schools have been ordered shut in Jalandhar and Amritsar districts in view of the rising threat.

The swollen Ravi has emerged as the biggest concern in Gurdaspur, where water inflows are surging due to heavy rainfall upstream. According to official data, the water level at Makora Pattan touched 2.50 lakh cusecs on Monday , prompting the civil administration to remain on high alert.

At Harike, the confluence of the Beas and Satluj rivers, the water discharge was recorded at 2.34 lakh cusecs in the morning. This surge is now flowing downstream towards Ferozepur (Hussainiwala) and Fazilka, where local administrations are on standby for possible emergency evacuations.

The state government has directed ministers and MLAs to personally monitor the situation in their constituencies and oversee relief and evacuation efforts wherever necessary. Disaster management teams have also been placed on high alert to tackle any sudden crisis. With river levels rising rapidly, authorities have appealed to residents in vulnerable areas to stay cautious and cooperate with administration during relief and rescue operations.
