Chandigarh : Punjab finds itself a notable participant in the national export landscape, according to the NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024, the latest comprehensive assessment released on Wednesday.

The EPI 2024, now in its fourth edition, ranks Indian states and union territories on their export readiness and performance across multiple pillars — including export infrastructure, business ecosystem, policy framework and export outcomes. This year’s ranking reflects evolving economic dynamics and broader government efforts to boost export-led growth.

In the large states category, Maharashtra topped the list, dethroning Tamil Nadu to become the most export-ready state, followed by Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh in the top five. While the national spotlight remains on coastal and industrial powerhouses, Punjab has also secured a place in the broader ranking, reflecting its status as a landlocked state with growing export aspirations. According to government sources, Punjab stands seventh overall among large states in the EPI 2024.

Punjab’s ranking signals progress, particularly when viewed against earlier iterations. In the previous 2022 export preparedness index, Punjab was ranked 11th among all states and union territories — a respectable showing for a landlocked state but still behind several peers. Trade experts say part of Punjab’s performance in export preparedness stems from its strong agricultural base, established manufacturing clusters and proximity to key northern markets. However, the state continues to face challenges related to export infrastructure, global market linkages and diversification into high-value goods beyond traditional commodities. Analysts note that increased focus on MSMEs, logistics enhancements and export-oriented policies could help Punjab climb higher in future editions.

The EPI 2024 also saw Uttarakhand top the list of smaller states and union territories, followed by Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu, and Goa. This category highlights rising export potential beyond traditional heartlands.

Government officials and industry stakeholders in Punjab welcomed the ranking as a sign of momentum but called for renewed strategic focus. In recent years, the state has hosted policy dialogues and workshops aimed at harnessing MSMEs as export growth drivers, particularly in sectors like textiles, machinery and processed foods.
