Chandigarh: Punjab has extended the closure of all schools till January 13 due to intensifying cold and dense fog across the state. The order applies to government, aided, recognised and private schools, officials said on Wednesday.
Earlier, schools were directed to remain shut till January 7, but the continuing cold wave prompted the extension. According to the weather office, minimum temperatures have dipped below 5°C in several parts of the state.

ਮਾਨਯੋਗ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸ.ਭਗਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਾਨ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵੱਧ ਰਹੀ ਠੰਡ ਅਤੇ ਧੁੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਿਆਂ, ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਟਾਫ ਦੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ, ਏਡਿਡ, ਮਾਨਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਈਵੇਟ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 13 ਜਨਵਰੀ ਤੱਕ ਛੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਹੁਣ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਕੂਲ 14 ਜਨਵਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਣਗੇ।
Bathinda was the coldest, recording 4.6°C, while Amritsar logged 7.5°C, Ludhiana 6.6°C, Patiala 7.1°C, and Gurdaspur 5.7°C. Authorities said the decision was taken in the interest of students’ safety as foggy conditions persist, affecting visibility during morning hours.
