New Delhi: A stormy session unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to a debate on his three recent press conferences where he accused the BJP, in collusion with the Election Commission, of orchestrating “vote chori” during elections.

The House witnessed sharp exchanges, with both leaders trading direct barbs across the aisle during a debate on election reforms. Gandhi reiterated his charge that the Centre had “rewritten the rules” to grant unprecedented immunity to Election Commissioners.
“For the first time in India’s history, decision was taken to give full immunity to election commissioners. Amit Shah ji must explain the thinking behind this,” he said.

Calling for an open debate, Gandhi declared, “Amit Shah ji, I challenge you — let us debate my three press conferences.” He also cited Haryana as one of “numerous examples” of alleged electoral manipulation.

Home Minister Shah responded firmly, saying he would not tailor his speech to Gandhi’s demands or allow anyone to dictate the order of his arguments. Unmoved, Gandhi retorted that Shah’s reply was “defensive, rattled and scared.” As Shah countered Gandhi’s allegations point by point, both treasury and opposition benches erupted, leading to a highly combative atmosphere in the House.
