Chandigarh: Intermittent rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms greeted residents of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula early Friday, as a wet spell swept across the Tricity, bringing relief from dry conditions but intensifying the winter chill.
Rain and thunderstorm activity began around 3 am and continued intermittently through the morning, with dense cloud cover persisting overnight and the sun remaining largely absent. Daily routines were disrupted as commuters navigated rain-soaked roads amid reduced visibility.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph at isolated places. The weather conditions, it warned, could further intensify the prevailing cold wave across the region.
According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rain is likely at a few places in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula on January 23 and 24. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain essentially unchanged over the next three days, after which a gradual rise of 2–3°C is anticipated. Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution during early morning and late evening hours, as wet roads and gusty winds may impact traffic conditions.
