Stacks of Currency Recovered From Bhubaneswar Flat
The dramatic seizure followed Mohanty’s arrest on Tuesday night by the Odisha Vigilance Department while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a licensed coal vendor in exchange for facilitating smooth business operations.
Officials described the ₹4-crore recovery as the highest-ever cash seizure made by the state’s anti-corruption agency.
Simultaneous Raids at Multiple Locations
Following the arrest, vigilance teams carried out coordinated searches at multiple premises linked to the officer — including his Bhubaneswar flat, his ancestral home in Bhadrak district, and his office in Cuttack.
During the searches, officials also recovered ₹1.20 lakh in cash from his office drawer.
In addition to the massive cash haul, investigators discovered a palatial double-storey house in Bhubaneswar and approximately 130 grams of gold, suggesting disproportionate assets.
Authorities are now examining financial records and property documents to ascertain whether the assets were acquired through illicit means.
Case Registered Under the Prevention of Corruption Act
A case has been registered against Mohanty under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Vigilance officials said further investigation is underway to trace additional assets and examine possible links with contractors and mining operators.
The seizure surpasses the agency’s previous record of ₹3.4 crore recovered in April 2022 from the residence of an assistant engineer in Ganjam district’s Minor Irrigation Division.
The latest action underscores intensified scrutiny of public officials in revenue-sensitive departments such as mining, where allegations of corruption and illegal gratification have periodically surfaced. Authorities indicated that more disclosures may follow as the probe progresses.
