Chandigarh: Two days after members of the Global Christian Action Committee mistakenly burnt an effigy bearing her photograph during a protest in Jalandhar, Charan Kaur, mother of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, has issued a legal notice to the organisers, accusing them of defamation and mental harassment. In the notice, Charan Kaur has demanded a written apology within 15 days, failing which the organisers will be liable to pay Rs 10 lakh as damages, sources said.
Effigy Burnt During Protest Outside DAC
The incident occurred on Wednesday when members of the Global Christian Action Committee staged a protest outside the District Administrative Complex (DAC). The demonstration was primarily aimed at Tejasvi Minhas, president of the Punjab Bachao Morcha, and activist Bhana Sidhu, against whom complaints had recently been submitted to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The duo had accused the Christian organisation of allegedly indulging in religious conversions and receiving funds from abroad through hawala transactions.
Charan Kaur’s Effigy Used ‘By Mistake’
During the protest, the demonstrators burnt three effigies, one of which wrongly carried the photograph of Charan Kaur, who has no connection with the issue. Though the protesters raised slogans only against Tejasvi Minhas and Bhana Sidhu and did not name Charan Kaur even once, the use of her image sparked immediate outrage.
When questioned by journalists at the spot, the protesters attempted to hide the effigy. They removed her photograph, later claiming that they had mistakenly believed she was the mother of Tejasvi Minhas.
Public Backlash, Videos Go Viral
The bizarre incident triggered a massive backlash, with videos of the protest going viral across social media platforms. Fans of Sidhu Moosewala strongly objected to what they termed an irresponsible, unethical and provocative act, demanding strict action against the organisers. Several major media outlets highlighted the issue, while thousands of social media users urged the Jalandhar administration to initiate legal action against those responsible.
Legal Action Sought for Defamation
In her legal notice, Charan Kaur has alleged that the act of burning an effigy bearing her photograph has damaged her reputation, caused immense mental agony, and amounted to deliberate negligence on the part of the organisers. The notice makes it clear that failure to issue a public apology within the stipulated time will result in civil and legal proceedings for compensation.
